    Default World's best students

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program...ent_Assessment

Are in East Asia and Europe, really.
It makes me proud to see ROC up there. Kudos to the Japanese and South Koreans.

One thing of interest is the: "Problem solving section". Of which, East Asian nations and territories, who suffered the worst stereotype of "unimaginative bookworms", are actually amongst the top five again.

    Go East Asia.
And yeah, Australia and New Zealand is up there, too.

Perhaps because the teachers, and the way they are "forced" to teach make those students feel retarded. I know for a while in school I felt that way. I sware I know more history than my history teacher in my 2nd year of highschool.

I actually didn't run into any creative and good teachers until Collage and even then most were not that good I thought, either too stuck up and full of themselves since they were a "Professer" or "Instructor" call them teacher and they'd likely slap you for insulting them. Though I didn't run into a few very good teachers then. Ignored rules eta eta, heck my Composition II teacher was my favorite, she ignored a lot of the pointless requirments which were completely bull crap, ie 7 spelling/grammer errors out of 10 pages of material qualifed for an automatic D in most Composition II classes. When Composition wasn't about how well you spell but the ability to do research, and comprohend, then debate, and write critical work, your own opinions of the topic. It was about "Thinking" in short, and forcing a student to go through wasted hours of seeing a tutor to make sure they did a good enough job on spelling/gramer to get a passing grade on a paper and you have to pay to see that tutor, all those tutors were also members of the english department... It was a conspiracy I think. See thats Composition!! lol

"Unfortunately for the US" sorry I rarely catch stuff like that.

I can quote that now "Unfortunately for the US" schools there are required to force electives onto students who most don't need to take. Every student in Highschool is being tought and prepared for Collage as if though were automatically going to Collage. Requiring them to take classes in which many do not really need, causing a huge headache, and as the years go on the requirements have constently gone up, and price and cost have gone up as well. Just before I left highschool you really only had one year where you took classes you wanted to take, by choice even then half were required classes, school isn't fun that way. Forcing people to learn things in which they know the field they wish to go into they will not really need. Ya it's nice getting in introduction to some things, but beyond that it isn't needed. Whats worse half what I learned in Highschool I had to relearn through Collage versions of those classes which barely added any new material to the course, and were basically sleep in class and get a B/A, and made me wonder why did I take this in highschool? Better yet why did I have to take this in collage? lol

Which is the biggest issue, make the students care and they "will do better" stuff them full of garbage and they will just be a "why" person. I'm a "why" person, always will be, "why" should I be rich? "Why" do I need to get a new car when friends tell me I should it will go until it dies on me, I can always buy another I have the money. "Why" should I want more than what I have? I have a confertable if not sometimes boring/depressing life style, though Ilive in the middle of no where almost so it is very boring. I think my boss was like OMG OMG OMG when I answered "I don't care about living in a million dollar home, nor do I ever care about ever getting that wealthy to get one" *pay's lumi half wage* I was very pestamistic at that interview I'm suprised it worked, guess he realised I wasn't an idiot, nor a suck up. That or cup cakes distracted him, and not the frosting kind.

Edit: too late at night I'm not thinking straight now.

We only have three real things you can learn. Math, Science and Physics. Anything else, no matter how "advanced" its labelled is a waste of space. I'm in advanced English, and it's just like regular English but for people who fancy themselves smarter than others. I'm doing stuff I could have accomplished in Grade 9, and so I stopped doing them. It takes genuis to make that descesion.

    So I'm moving to Toronto.

I see, that kinda sucks. I guess the maritime's have crappy education? I live in Ontario btw, city of Mississauga just beside Toronto (only lived there for 1 year and 6 in Miss).

Anyways Woot for Canada's high scores!

Kinda surprising US isn't in the top 20.

    The crappiest.

There is a good reason why so many people move out of the maritimes, and there is a good reason so many move back when they're older. Nova Scotia is the perfect place to settle down and raise a family, but it's one of the worst places to grow up in this Country.

Exactly. Grades mean precisely jack in the real world. They're just a means to end, which is getting into a good college to get a good degree so one can get a good job. They're not an accurate indicator of real intelligence.

I got poor grades in school. This does not mean that I am not smart; most people would actually that I am very intelligent for my age.
For most kids, poor grades mean that they're lazy rather than dumb. For me, it was a combination of laziness and a bizarre phobia (I have an intense fear of doing things wrong, so I sometimes just avoid doing said thing altogether).

And what exactly is the real world? Intelligence in the real world is not that hidden spark of intellectualness that was lacking in the confines of the school curriculum, it is the ability to perform well under pressure, get good marks and succeed in businesses and jobs In other words, money. Intellectuals and academics are the most intelligent people in our society, but they get paid nothing and have a terrible quality of life compared to entrepeneurs, lawyers and doctors. Being interested in history or well versed in classical literature is irrelevent for most people in the 'real world'.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

    Fixed.

Good marks does not guarantee a succeed in career; in fact, most people can point out that it is two business.

I have been struggling to figure out that the purpose of school is, and my conclusion is school is not a place for studying (in fact, it performs poorly as a place to study, which studying should be and must be done by self-studying), but rather a place for children to learn and practice the correct attitude of working and socialing; it also performs as a place to create children's personality.

Generally, a student who has good mark means he/she is responsible for his/her work seriously - a necessary attitude in any work; of course, there are a few exception but those who does not have this attitude generally perform poorly once they left school.

So do you perform better in "real world" than your better graded compatriots?

They go to good college to learn more, they get good degrees to get good job...
It does not matter if you flunked because you are stupid or lazy, neither attribute will speak good for your chances in "real life".

I have nothing but respect for people doing the menial labor. Plumbers keep the less glorious part of our lives flowing.

But it hardly is sign of great achievement to be a plumber. Requirements just are bit on the low end.

And that doesn't apply to me? I go to college.

I am neither. As I said, mostly my poor grades in high school was because of a phobia.

In any case, you don't have to be a ing ass about it. It's like you're trying to make me depressed or something.

Like you are a Japanese schoolgirl.

Anyway, 15 years old... Be smart in 15 years old does not mean much from my experience, especially for boys...

The best age for boys to learn is roughly from 16 to 24, when they finally settle down.

any massive population nations represented at all?

if you took all the smartest kids from every other nation, and put them against the smartest kids in china or india --- china and india would win every time.( because im sure the gross populations of smarty pants in each group outnumbers the tiny nations represented in that study)
