    Default The Canadian Marking System?

This has been on my mind for a while, as I've been living in Canada for about 7 years now (lived in the US before coming to Canada for 7years). I do not understand why in Canada an 80% and up considered an "A"? The rest of the world considers 90% and up an "A". I asked my teachers and they don't seem to know the answer either. My dad studied in the states and can't come to accept 80% an "A".

On top of that, I'm an 85 average at school, and believe in me there is only like 1-2 people in my classes that ever manage to pull a 90 in any subjects. Most classes in my school have 70-75% average in any given subject (and no my school is not one of those poor performing ones). I sometimes use that when arguing with my dad over this as he sees my avg as nothing more than a B once i step out of this country. I tell him so you're saying the majority of the school has a C average?

I'm guessing the education is "harder" that is why they brought it down to an 80% (I'm aware my guess sounds idiotic but i have no other guess). I think it is because a friend of mine that lived in Canada had an avg in the 80's and when he moved to Houston, Texas his avg suddenly went in the 90's and he told me its not like he was trying to the max. When i was in the states, in elementary where we get letter grades, I'd usually get a few A's and the rest B's. In Canada i got the same marks and as soon as they became percentage marks in my report card it was 80's and 70's, in the states that would be considered B's and C's. I also doubt i became stupid after i came here

So any answers to why its like this in Canada?

I've read somewhere that the US gives A's very easily, compared to other countries.
Like a comparison of grades, where the Harvard had something like 80% A's and Oxford 35%.

To be honest they both suck.

Schools should focus on teaching, not giving out arbritrary numbers.

The thing is, getting A in US is easier than in Canada. Its just that Canadian education has higher standards, I guess.

So I'm right in that Canada is harder? But still why would it lower its qualifications for an A to 80%? I think we're the country that does it.

One thing I can tell you is while at university we had numerous american students come up north to study. They all had high marks, A, A+'s etc but failed hard in keeping up with the Canadian students in our engineering courses. I think it comes down to difficulty level of the material taught. In the US the material isn't as in depth as the Canadian material which requires a grading scheme that that makes it more difficult. So instead of having challenging course material the US has challenging grading schemes. WHile Canada has challenging course material but not so challenging grading schemes. So the letter grades are comparative for the two nations. An A in Canada shows the same skill and understanding of the material as an American A. Not to mention letter grades mean NOTHING in canada. We work primarily with the percentages.

    This is important to note.

Beyond elementary school, when the marks actually matter, they use solely percentage points. Requirements for everything is put in percentages. You can equate a percentage to a letter grade, but the letter grade is meaningless.

But would a Canadian 85 be equal to an American 95 to the rest of the world that follows the US grading scheme?
Also, say if i would go to an university in the US would they treat my 80's as nothing more than B's.

My apologies, I meant the common grading scheme of 90%=A, 80%=B etc.
