Is your .Net framework up to date and is you direct9 up to date? I am talking about doing it manually , because Windows Update will never do it.

I have the same problem and it all started when I got my new videocard: ATI HD4870. I posted already a few posts in Third age total war techncial forums,as I wanna play that game, but I think the problem is in medieval total war 2 with this "Total War encountered an unspecified error".

I tried almost everything and I still can't play the game, but the strange thing is that I could play it 4 dayz ago with my old videocard and now suddenly I can't anymore.
Im gonna check this thread to see if I can find a solution here.
Or do you want me to make another thread about the same problem? I have XP in stead of VIsta

    I i have 3.5 net framework and i just updated directx9.

Error only emerges on a campaign map ! never in battle, and it's not connected with something i clicked or something like that.

    @luraz
I have ati card too , updated drivers but i think that is not a problem cos i can play sometimes for more then 10 turns and play battles without problem

Also i just downloaded bik player and tested those bik files, they all worked ok.

Yeah mate, I really dont know.
4 dayz ago I had a older card in my pc and the game was running perfect. Now I got a new card ATI HD 4870 wich is MUCH better then my old 1 and now I have this stupid crashes. When I have a battle the game is running perfectly, but suddenly-->game crashes. I tried almost everything man, really. I took a lot of advice of third age total war technical help but nothing worked...

    I tried:
-Uninstall/ reinstall for like 6 times already
-Used the manually uninstall method(Wich I also deleted the register files of MTW 2)
-I tried to search for the 2 files of geography in MTW 2/data, but they are not there because I never used the unpacker. I just installed MTW 2 and Kingdoms with a disk. Right after that I updated my kingdoms to version 1.05.
    - I have windows XP, so the trick with the 2 files(config. and save) in the hidden folder does not work for me.
    - I am the administrator of my computer,so no probelms with that.
    - I have totally no bad software like daemon tools/vuze/limewire,so That couldnt be the problem also.
    - I also dont really think my videocard cant handle it. I mean,common... I had my old videocard and it was workign perfectly. Now I have this new card and I get crashes every time I am besieging a town(with or without walls)

Campaign is perfect, automatic fight is perfect, but normal battles are impossible since my last card

I really hope 1 of the moderators can help us with this problem. Thats why I am staying in this thread and I hope som1 can help us

ps I am uninstalling everything once again+also the register files. If it worked, ill tell ya, but dont count on it

@luraz, just keep it here. I can handle both. Third Age being Kingdoms, it should have its own mod folder and not interfering with the basic game. I also don't belive it to be drivers, even video because I never had trouble with ATI's. If you could play the game before you installed Third Age, it's something outside the hardcode.

To luraz and gogic and anyone else reding this with the same problem, please give me a full list of all the programs on your harddrive(s). This includes the the operating system, office, utilities, like defraggers, firewalls, antivirus, games, music makers, movie makers, dvd burners, freeware, shareware, the whole lot, no matter how little it is.

First thing as i see we have a totally different problems.

I get error only on campaign map ! and it's random not connected with some event like seage or similar. Battles are working perfect and they are not interrupted with error.

    @luraz
can u point me to a topic where is explained "- I have windows XP, so the trick with the 2 files(config. and save) in the hidden folder does not work for me."

    Sure mate-->http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...=263136&page=2

This is the technical help of Third age total war, but the problem was the same"Total War encountered an unspecified error" So I found out this is something to do with the old medieval war 2. In that threads of Third age total war technical they offer all kind of solutions for VISTA,but not for XP. So if u don't have VISTA, you will never find those 2 files(save and config.)
Thats why I joined this thread.

btw,I also get this error sometimes on battlemap, but usually I get it from real battles.

Ok, I discovered something new. I installed World of warcraft:Wotlk now and the game keeps on crashing. This is something I never had with my old card to.
I think this is some proof for me that there is something with my videocard or hardware?
Or maybe my configuration of my ATI videocard isnt good?

hey, if your old card is working fine, it means you most likely installed your new one wrong. Did you wipe all video drivers from your system while the old card is still installed, (down to basic windows drivers) then remove the old video card. Then put in the new card, and install your drivers. If you didn't, it will cause problems, usually more than just in games, but it definetly could be the culprit.

hey can you post your whole log (just do an attachment) not just the last 3 lines.
Also, does it happen when scrolling the campaign map? or also when just sitting looking at the same spot?
You said you updated your drivers, was the after the crash started or before?

Securom is used for copy protection for this game so you will find it on your harddrive.
Via Sound is the onboard sound chip.
World of Warcraft is not copy protected.
Save and .cfg would not cause your problem, XP or Vista.

If battles are fine but the campaign map is bad it is usually resolution set too high. Set it the same as the battle map. You can set it manually in the medieval2.preferences.cfg. After you do make it read-only so the game can't override it.

@luraz, you didn't say if you could play vanilla before installing TATW.

I haven tried playing Medieval vanilla with my new card, but I could play medieval vanilla/kingdoms and empire:total war without any problems with my old card( that was Nvidia EN8800GS) I could also play TATW without enay problems with that videocard, but now suddenly I cant...

I can test a game with medieval 2 vanilla with my new card, and ill report what happaned, To see if its something with my ATI card.

ps. still I find it strange. Now I have 2 games on my destkop:- Medieval/Kingdoms/TATW
    - WOW:Wotlk
And they both crashing...with ATI HD 4870.

On both games, have you setting them on minimum and working your way back up the list?

Your card can handle max but you may have another bottleneck in your cpu, ram, or something that can't keep up with it.

If I put everything on minimum, the crash still happens.

Also I just played medieval 2 Vanilla and it crashed. I am now 99% sure it is my hardware/videocard.
It could be like u said my cpu/ram can't keep up with my videocard. I have not a lot of knowledge about computers,so how could I fix this?

Just checked your specs, again and you have enough to run this game. I don't think it's hardware because you have evrything up to date.

Now process of elimination so please bear with me even with you in the Netherlands and I'm in California.

Uninstall the game, uninstalling the Kingdoms campaigns first. Be sure to delete the Sega folder, run a registry cleaner, and reboot for good luck.
Install Medieval2, no updates or file changes. Start a campaign. If you can start a campaign and go for more than a few turns, you're good and then install Kingdoms and all four campaigns. For some reason it works better that even if you're only going to use one. Start a campaign and go for more than a few turns in Medieval2, and all four campaigns. Do they work? If so time to install the Kingdoms 1.5 patch. Do all four campaigns still work? If no to any of these you know which step your problem is, whether, Medieval2 vanilla, Kingdoms, or the update. If it all still works, then install Third Age. From then on the problem is the mod's.
It's a longwinded process but it takes out the guesswork.

    Good luck.
