I saw no similar thread, so here we go. Post your fav drummers, be them any sort of fellas, jazz, rock, reggae, doesn't really matter. Feel the grooooove.

    My list starts like this:
    1. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment)

    2. Vinnie Paul (Pantera)

    3. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)

By the way, if John Bonham still lived, he would have his 61th birthday tomorrow. May he rest in peace.

Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, who died on 25 September, 1980, aged 32, was one of the most respected and accomplished drummers of his generation.

With a unique style that combined intense power with immense technical skill, he made up a crucial quarter of one of the biggest rock acts ever.

Nicknamed 'Bonzo', he was loved by both fans and peers alike, and left a huge legacy in the rock and heavy metal world.

His explosive style is most in evidence on such Led Zeppelin classics as 'Immigrant Song', 'When The Levee Breaks', 'The Ocean' and the remarkable 'Moby Dick'.

John Henry Bonham was born in Redditch, Worcestershire on 31 May, 1948. By the age of five he was playing on drum kits made from containers and tins.

After leaving school he worked in construction whilst drumming for various local bands. In the mid-sixties he met future Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, with whom he formed Band of Joy in 1967.

In 1968, Jimmy Page, guitarist in The Yardbirds, was seeking a new band. He recruited Robert Plant who suggested Mr Bonham for the drum stool, and with John Paul Jones on bass guitar completing the line up, Led Zeppelin was born.
By this stage Mr Bonham had earned a reputation as the loudest drummer in Britain, something uncompromisingly proven on the band's eponymously titled first album.

Over the next few years, Led Zeppelin enjoyed phenomenonal international success, each of their albums achieving enormous sales, with the band extensively touring the world several times.

The band soon developed their live show to include elaborate effects and lengthy solos, including Bonham's on 'Moby Dick' which often lasted as long as half an hour and featured him playing with his bare hands.

Throughout the band's period of massive popularity in the seventies, Mr Bonham often did session work for other artists, including Screaming Lord Sutch, Roy Wood and Wings.

His premature death occurred after a night of heavy drinking. John Bonham's singular drumming style, one of extreme power and aggression, has ensured his status as one of the greats.

As well as his strength, he was also known for his versatility, frequently visiting Latin and funk both on record and in concert.

His tragic death brought an immediate end to Led Zeppelin, the other members refusing to reform without their totemic percussionist.

His incorrigible spirit and justified confidence in his own talent is summed up by a comment he made to Robert Plant following a concert: "You're alright, but you're only half as good a singer as I am a drummer."

There was a thread about it, if I'm not mistaken.

Just to have a discussion here...
As an ex-drummer, I can tell you that Bonham, read it carefully, was talentless. At least, compared to the rest of the classic bands.
Ian Paice, Neil Peart, Mick Fleetwood, Billy Cobham to name a few are way, way better. Phil Collins beats him too...
Portnoy is playing fast but very simple. Very few polyrythmic passages and uses a snare drum just too much. Very few really creative sketches.
You should give a try to the guys like Richard Christy or Gene Hoglan, if you like really good prog. metal or fusion drums.
Vinnie Paul has his signature - bass drums' sound. Other than that... Well, he is good, but I'd take Danny Herrera, Dave Lombardo and Flo Mounier any day over him.

heh, well i understand you to don't like led zeppelin, but saying they're a piece of garbage is a bit bold, dont you think?

anyways,ac/dc is my favourite band, but i don't think they had a great drummer.i mean, all 3 drummers that played with them were good for the music they played, and they were nothing special.

    ps.

i don't think bonham was the best of the best.he was one of the great.

but a piece of garbage?i think not.

I never said that I was amazed with Rudd's diversity either.
Vizi just pointed out that Bonham is no match for him from the prof. point.

I know that. Which is why I said that.

And it is not bold to say Led Zeppelin is terrible. It is my well formulated opinion that they are nothing but a band devoid of originality, mixed with thievery, pop and pretend hard rock. And a song about vikings that I cleverly changed the words to to make it about a coworker.

A bit extreme? For not liking some pop rock band? I find your defense of a pop rock band extreme.

Glam 'metal' is pop rock. Led Zeppelin is proto-glam. Led Zeppelin is 70s era pop rock.

i thought glam existed before led zeppelin

i mean, more or less, all bands from the 60's and 70's were glam at the begining.

but again i agree,i hate glam too.
