Series that looks at why the UK has become one of the most watched places in the world - with millions of CCTV cameras, a growing network of number plate recognition cameras, one of the largest DNA databases in the world and government plans for the basic details of all our phone calls, emails and every internet site we visit, to be logged and kept.

The logic behind this is that we all benefit from better crime detection and from simpler and cheaper services. The government argues that 'If you've got nothing to hide, then you've got nothing to fear.'

Richard Bilton explores the hidden world of surveillance. He goes inside the CCTV nerve centre, sees how all our journeys can be monitored and meets undercover agents, those who are watched and those who have fallen foul of modern surveillance.

found it quite intersting, also disturbing. one scene where we are shown, just how easy it is to say, connect to nursery camera and wath other peoples children, or people being chided on loudspeaker if they are seen to drop litter in the street by the people watching them through the CCTV. Familes are watch by parked vans routinely, as the local councils use the terrorism laws for just about anything, including dog fouling.

Its great being able to film terrorist blowing themselves up otherwise how would you notice? Filming happy slapping used to be a logistical nightmare but now the government is finaly aiding these chavs in need.

It's a policy that went wrong and is unpopular, so yes. Whether they did before the CCTV was installed is the question.

Yes. The large dismantlement of the surveillance state is a manifesto pledge. Privacy is very much a conservative thing.

In my country its the conservatives pushing for the same shite including internet and even hard-disk surveillance, and its the social-dems blocking it.

I guess its more something that came to birth as a sign of the time for the ruling party's, then it being a question of center-partys ideologys, but of course the Tories know how to chip in on unpopular labour policy's.

In NZ the only people who watch you are shopkeepers/managers, and security guards (in larger stores).
