A little help for making Skins...

Hey there, hope this is the right place to post this.

I'm a total beginner at mod-making and re-skinning things. But there are many things I would like to at least attempt to re-skin (Such as the Black Watch).

The problem is I'm not sure how you go about actually making a skin. So can someone please tell me which programs are needed and how you would go through step-by-step making a skin and making it available to play in-game.
