In the official strategy thread, I noticed a resounding lack of battle strategies. So post your own successful strategies here, and I will add them to the first post.

Early Game:
Early game, it is important to not overstretch yourself. You have relatively weak units, with little variety. I always put a hold on expansion until I receive Mumakil or Southrons. However, if you happen to be a blitzer, here are my strategies:
Pin and Thread:
The Pin and Thread maneuver is a simple but risky one. You will use this against trolls later(if you choose that path). The basic idea is to keep the enemy from running, while raining arrows on them.
First, you want to move several units in front of the enemy, in a normal battle formation. Once they start to close, move several other infantry units to the sides and back of the enemy. It should look like this:
X=Enemy
_=Infantry
I=Infantry
A=Archers
___
IXXI
IXXI
----
AAA
Once you have the enemy in a box, it is imperative to NOT engage them. Let your archers shoot at them while you hold them from running. If they do start to attack you, then it is easy enough to flank them from all sides and tighten your square.
Using Southron Pikemen makes this easier; you can hold the enemy at a greater distance inside the square.
Corsair Blitz:
Corsair Blitzing requires, well, Corsairs. Loads of Corsairs. This is best used when attacking, but can work for an active defense.
The setup, once performed, should look mainly like:
C=Corsair
E=Enemy
C EEEEEE C
CEEEEEE C
C EEEE C
C C C
You should start out in a normal line, and then advance like so:
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
even if you have less men, stretch your line out longer. it is imperative.
once engaged, start moving your center back to look like the previous diagram. Once the enemy chases your men back, your flanks can close in and envelop the enemy, destroying and routing them easily.
Buy lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of archers. Put archers in giant line facing the enemy. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Aim. Fire. Then, if there are still enemies left that aren't routing (highly unlikely), mop them up with 2 units of heavy spearmen or swordsmen. Rinse and repeat.
In my opinion a top battle tactic in sieges is to sally your Cavalry and stop as many wall scaling units as possible (going for ladders first then siege towers) leaving only the ram at the gate. If you have the time charge the ram as well to slow it down. As long as you have 4 units of archers on the walls you should decimate the enemy before they breach the gate and then they have to suffer the burning oil throughout their attack. Cavalry should only remain in combat long enough to stop the siege engines and retreat to the flanks as soon as possible. Once the enemy are through the gate position all your remaining cavalry in their line of retreat and when their general dies none should escape.
Dwarves:
Infantry are your best..well, only friends. USE THEM. Until you get crossbows most of your battles will be slugfests, so get some miners as fodder and some warriors as main troops, with everything else as a specialty. Use the western Dwarves to take Lunelaith and Nenuial. The purpose of these is to fund your eastern campaigns. As Dwarves, you can either go for the Misty Mountains (98% recommended), Rhun (1.5% recommended) or betraying Dale and dooming the entire northern war effort (0.5% recommended). If you choose the Misty Mountain campaign, then you may be able to bring some reinforcements from the west to hammer the orcs even more, but the distance is so large it's not even worth it
EDIT: make sure you hire Dale cavalry mercs before going to a known open field battle. They are your ONLY cavalry...EVER...so use them well
