Medievil2: Total War has encountered an unspecified error and must now exit...

I have posted about this before but the problem has gotten worse and I want some serious help with it this time.

A couple of days ago I unpacked M2:TW data files so I could mod something in the Teutonic map, however the unpacking didn't go so well because I still can't mod anything .

However, now whenever I try to play a battle the game crashes as soon as it has finished loading, giving this message: Medieval2: Total War has encountered an unspecified error and must now exit...

Does anyone have an idea what I can do about this? I have tryed just about anything, reinstalling (3 times!), restore point etc. nothing works.

Are you using Vista? Did you unpack everything or just the Teutonic Campaign?

Well I ran the whole unpack thingy just like the read me said, and yes i am using vista...

When the ticker was running by, how many files did you unpack, estimated?
I had the UAC disabled when I did it but are you aware Vista unpacks them in a different location?
Did you read the readme about the two geography files that have to be deleted to fight battles?
Did you notice that each of the campaigns has its own unpacker?

I have no idea how much, I ran it a couple of days ago and since then I have been trying all sorts of things of repairing it myself, this has all failed and now I am forced to ask about this for the second time...
I was not aware that Vista unpacks them somewhere else, but thats not the point. I can't run any battle whatsoever since I ran it and I want to re enable them by stopping the CTD that occurs when the battle has finished loading.
I did just read it, but I didn't find any of those geography files...
Yes, I know this, but I just ran the main unpacker that unpacks everything.

Vista has a bad habit of only unpacking about two-thirds of it before it craps out with no warning. http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showth...unpacker+vista is a way to get it done I came up with and someone else was kind enough to put some order to it for me.
The two geography files are buried, hidden by Vista in your users folder, not in your program files folder.
The unpack_everything.bat only unpacks Medieval2. You still have to run the unpackers for each campaign individually. They are not included in the everything.bat because Kingdoms came after that bat file was written.

Haven't tryed the Kingdoms yet, but the problem has returned. I have followed every step to the letter and only managed to play a couple of battles before the error came back.
Are there more tricks that I can try?

Now that you can fight battles, you are down to everyone else's main gripe: how bugged the units and siege walls are even with the 1.2 patch. Has anybody got a fix for them? Not they are advertizing.

If you want to mod and fight battles here is a good starting point. In the Mod Workshop, there are subforums and threads devoted to this problem.

And, sorry, there is no trick. Just a lot of work.

Well I figured out the problem, its the UAC, I ran the program in Administrator mode and the battles work now. Thanks again for the help Irishron!
