    Default Performance Drop

    I sensed a recognizeable performance drop in comparisson to the vanilla version of the game. I replaced the blood overlay textures with those of broken crescent, which helped a little.
    Any other speculations/ tipps on why the performance suffers and the best counter meassures to this? I could play large unit size before, 2 huge armies and everything went fine, but in this mod I get problems already with normal unit sizes... Whats the reason for this? Are the texture sizes of the modells too huge maybe?

    High-polygon models + crimson tide textures. Here is your performance drop.

    Well for one, some of the units are more detailed. When dealing with a faction like the Elves you get incredibly detailed units. When dealing with orcs, they usually have twice the size of army you'd be used to in M2TW vanilla because they get 250 men per unit. Those factors probably aren't the cause, but could be contributing to your problem.

    Yeah, we know about that. The main reason is the failing of lods (level of detail), as you know the units turn in a certain distance into sprites (flat textures), but before this transformation effect there are those so called lods which are still 3d models but with less plygons than the orginal one which you see on close distance. You wonīt see all polygons of a soldier on a far distance anyway, so this wonīt make a quality drop but give alot more performance because we donīt have the close-model for the whole distance, what is the current situation; but it is still some additional work which will be done in time.
    A further smaller reason is that some units especially rhun (what has a crazy amount of polys) have slightly more polygons than pure vanila, but that should be a minor reason overall; and donīt forget the unit sizes are way bigger than vanilas.

    @ratbag: the link refers to the campaing map (where I have no problems ironically ^^), but thanks for the link anyways- I am sure theres many people out there that have problems with the campaing map and due to your link they shall find salvation =)

    @devils advocate: very good explanation- thanks. Hope the LOD problem will (and can) be adressed...

    Thanks for the great replies @all so far!

    Note: the TATW team added a lil' snippet in the Sega/M2TW/Mods/Third Age Total war/TATW.cfg file which causes it to default to huge every time you start the game, so if you start a new campaign either edit the

    Code:
    unit_size = huge
    out of the file or change the unit size to normal before you start the campaign, you may of been playing on huge all this time.

    maybe it'll help if you make the armies smaller? Just go to options on the main screen and toggle unit size (i think that's what it says) from huge to large or normal. You won't have any 5000 soldier battles going on, but things might run more smoothly.

    I play: Third Age, Broken Crescent, Stainless Steel
    I wait for: Broken Crescent 1.5, The Last Kingdom, Dominion of the Sword

    Thanks Rilder- will try this!

    @addi!ct: yeah I play on "normal" now- it works this way...its playable. But the drop to the original game or the grand campaing mod is notiecable. Playing around with the camera angles helps also.

    I really hope, the aforementioned LOD problem can and will be adressed (didnt know about this issue before...).
