question about PHOTOSHOP

Hello friends!

I have a question about photoshop. I am busy with skinning now and I want to take a design from one clothe and want to use it as uniform at etw. but i need to keep shadows and folded parts at clothe. what i want to ask how to imply design to the clothes while protecting shadows and folded places at clothes?

What I do most of the time ( I use gimp but I'm sure you can do the same in photoshop) I create a selection with the area I want to color and I use the different color tools to change the color ( colorize etc...) what way, I keep shadows and folded part clothe ( if I understand you correctly ) but sometimes I create my own shadows with the airbrush at low opacity.

i think you use the color balance if i am not mistaken.
