Default I make an exception to houserules when...

Two critical battles in a row, I uncheck the AI control on reinforcements box, and the battle loads up with the AI still in control of the reinforcements.

    Yargh!

Gonna have to reload from an earlier save, Cap.

Fighting a Carthaginian army with 6 units of elephants in it requires a delicate touch.

So, gents, when do you bend the rules?

I have to be honest i don' t follow them for the full 100%. To give you one example i retrain my legions when thy are near Italie. But on fighting battles and reloading the game i am very strict. If i loose one because of the reason you just mentioned i keep playing. But i understand your point because it is very frustrating when the AI get' s in to action when you think you swithced them off.

One tip on this look to the enemies troops before you turn of the reinforcements box.

Well position youreself so you can hold out until reinforcements arrive to you. Medicine for elephants is javelins, put off fire at will on your velites and use them for the ellies. Also place your triarii on the flanks and you should be fine.

For the houserules its up to you if you want to bend them or play without them just aslong you have fun. I you find it hard in the first 15-20 turns read the guide of how to survive them. Try to stick to them if you choose to use them its alot more fun i think since the longer and bigger you get the greater the challenge get.

Playing 7.0 for the first time its normal to restart a campign cause you arent aggressive enough in the start. I know i did hehe...

I know how to handle the elephants...and that's exactly why I'm going back and reloading.

The first critical battle was okay, so I'm leaving it alone...I just lost a well developed family member.

The second one was a battle where an already blasted legion was out of movement points and being supported by the Carthago garrison. Between the two forces I had maybe 9 or 10 functional units of troops...and I start the battle only to find that 7 of those units were about to be sent headlong into the 100 elephants coming my way. Literally 100. 3 units of War Ellies and 4 of Armoured Ellies.

Carthage isn't too happy about losing Carthago and Hadrumetum.

Well it is possible for the hypaspist to be in but as i told you it' s a Roman mod so this game comes to best when you play as the Roman faction.

As for this being better then RS, well both games have there own qualities.

i follow about 90% of the rules, there are a couple i don't get or like - my main one being legion composition (i like a little extra cavalry) but the ones i bend or break i try to follow the 'spirit' of the rules, so i keep the same legion compasitions as usual but instead of two of the missile troops i allow myself flexability (otherwise i'm very strict in my legion composition)

i'm bending a few extra at the moment - mainly because i'm trying to get the testing done so sulla can realise the add-on

"The actual fighting unit of Hypaspists seems to lived on in Macedonia as the corps of 'Peltasts', whose status, equipment and role seems to be almost exactly the same as that of the Hypaspist under Alexander"
    - Polyb. V.26.8
Yes, there are Peltasts. All Greek-related nations have Peltasts, and some even have Heavy Peltasts

But I see the game refers to Hypaspists as the Royal Pikemen which Macedonia has

I follow most of the important house rules,No river battles, fight at the walls if besieged,no save game reruns etc. Im flexible on legion composition, I move my velites south during the first turns, my slingers north, the enemy dictates composition. But when it comes to the rule about not attacking AI fleets with armies, forget it,the AI has sunk my armies, and its payback time. But can't see the point in biulding a fleet, and not being allowed to dominate the sea, thats what navies are for.

well i am yet to see the AI launch a convincing invasion so i pretty much don't worry about the seas (i usually don't build a navy until it is time to attack Greece or Iberia)

let them invade - it makes the game more fun

Yeh I guess it would be more fun maybe, but its the principal of having a fleet. I have just taken sicily after a hard fight with the greeks, they landed reinforcing army after army(spartans!),could not let them just sail past my fleet, victory only came after they started interdicting the greek fleets. As to the house rules Im fexible, each to there own.

well i have to say i picked up most of the house rules as i got better - to my mind you choose them once you fully get used to and do well in SPQR, i will certainly be the last person to criticise anyone because of that

    What ever make it fun

Its sad they they did not incorporate naval battles in RTW, that aspect of warfare was critical at that period in time, the biggest naval battles in terms of lives lost occur then. But as I get better I might take on more house rules.
