    Default Need Help Please

Right so I've been playing RS for about a week now on M/M and I found it quite enjoyable. However I'm having a bit of trouble. I'm playing as Rome, and have conquered nearly all of germany and france, I've got decent profit. But now 3/4 of my cities are either unhappy or are rioting. I mean, one city in particular has continously revolted against me and I've had to take it back. And why is it that when they revolt, suddenly all these units appear with gold chevrons?? What the heck is that about?? All these peasants are secretely elite soldiers?? Also, nearly every town I take over I either enslave or relocate (mostly relocate) just to stop them from rioting. But they still always do, it's very frustrating. Even when I build suburbs/villages/towns to reduce the squalor it doesn't seem to help much. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Well there's not much you can do about it, there a few towns that are 'known' for rioting no matter what you build.

p.s Those towns/suburbs etc. don't work, because they increase health iirc

You need to train up some decent governors and have them ready with a garrison force ready to take over the recently conquered settlements. You get decent governors by recruiting them in a settlement where you've built up the academies. You also leave them in that settlement to 'train up' - you should see their retinues/traits improve. You can also move retinues between generals / governors / family members.

You also need to replace as many of the occupied settlements 'cultural' buildings with your own. Either by upgrading them when the settlement grows or by demolishing them and rebuilding from scratch. Remove any religious buildings that don't belong to your faction.

As Telsa has posted there are some settlements that take a while to subdue (if ever). A lot of this is due to differences in culture between the original holders and the conquerers.

But what I don't understand is if I "relocate" the original occupants, shouldn't citizens of my empire who I've already conquered and aren't rebellious move into that settlement?

No, it's the old 'exterminate' command, with better PR.

Usually, it keeps a settlement from revolting for at least twenty or thirty turns in Vanilla. But in RS, the rebuild of the population can be amazingly fast (I've had 12.5% with very high taxes and that's steeper than the usual loss of life during a plague) and the city therefore can be a terrible pain. Try to entertain the population with lavish (and daily) games and races. And as Brusilov said, don't forget the governor.

Yeah I know its the old "exterminate" command, so still, why would people who Ive already conquered move into my city and rebel? And Ive tried entertaining them, I had daily games plus low tax and still they revolt. They should be proud to be part of the great Roman Empire

    Post screens of your settlement. Include the following;

    1) all the buildings in the settlement (include which culture the buildng belongs to)
    2) the 'settlement details' screen (if possible write down the breakdowns shown)
    3) the governors retinue / traits (if possible get details of what each one does)

It may be easier to just compress a save game and attach it into a post in this thread.

I have no idea how to do that Plus I don't control the city anymore anyway. Oh what do all Barbarian buildings create unrest? I thought it was just the religious ones. That may be the problem

Nobody is moving into this city. But the last fourth of the initial population may have taught their children the Romans were to be hated, who knows?

Anyway, German and Galli cities have a different culture from the Roman one. So it's harder to keep them under the yoke than, say, Greek settlements. If you really aren't able to curb the rioters, take the city where Zeus's statue is (in game, I think it's Messene). It will give you a very good bonus to public order.

Oh, and as temples go, you will find that Jupiter's is best for the purpose of peacekeeping. Check also if you haven't left taverns, bardic circles or any barbarian building that may hurt your public order.

Not all specifically, but there is a culture penalty attached. Plus, as I have said, buildings like taverns (or execution square when you conquer the East) can be bad for public order.

best strategy - build over every building you can. if you can't, demolish it. if you can't do either, then hopefully the bonuses from your other buildings will compensate!

I've occasionally, when in the same situation - of a city that just will not get good public order, wished there was a way to just leave the city with my troops and totally and utterly destroy it so that not a stone is left standing such that it can never be re-settled. Maybe one day I'll set up outside with a load of onagers, ballistas etc and just fire the whole city and see if I can't actually totally destroy it.
