Default Bloodiest European battles per century

So lets see if we can come up with a list of the 20 battles that took most casualties in their century beginning with the first century. Fought on European soil by whoever.

Number of casualties on both sides combined, either killed or wounded, prisoners NOT included.

Do you mean just set piece battles ? For example the Somme, (around 1.5 million casualties) is called a battle but was really an offensive lasting several weeks.

I admit the term 'battle' is difficult to apply in 20th century warfare. Here along with the actual numbers the definition of a battle is up to discussion as well.

Does European mean taking place in Europe, itself quite ambiguous, or a battle between two European nations, or even just a battle with one European nation/coalition. Take for example the Crusades, are those European battles? What about the Kingdom of Jerusalem. I would argue that the KoJ was a European nation.

Well, in order to keep things simple: Fought on European soil.

Sticking with Wikipedia I add http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Torgau for the 18th century.

This seems to be getting more and more complex the more i look into it

But i think its something that needs to be addressed i would say (for top 5 at least)

    1. Stalingrad (sequences of 'battles')
    2. Somme
    3. Paschendael
    4. Battle of Waterloo(?)
    5. Battle of Grimsby upon Avon

    #. Battle of Beanfield ()

How many at Landen actually died? in the wikipedia article only total casualties are mentioned, but it is not mentioned if the majority of the casualties were prisoners or KIA/WIA.

    according to this article:
"Les alliés laissaient sur le champ de bataille 18 000 morts ou blessés, 1 500 prisonniers et 104 canons. Le Tapissier de Notre-Dame envoya au Roi 22 drapeaux et 60 étendards, mais sa victoire lui coûtait 10 000 braves".

18.000 allies were dead or wounded plus 1.500 prisoners with 104 canons

According to the Theory of War, which teaches that the best way to avoid the inconvenience of war is to pursue it away from your own country, it is more sensible for us to fight our notorious enemy in his own realm, with the joint power of our allies, than it is to wait for him at our own doors.
