I think for the full effect you should use BI. Although several of the regular forum members here swear by ALEX.

RTW, no additional features; BI, swimming, shield wall, hordes; Alex, enhanced AI

The argument really is whether you want hordes and shield wall (BI) or better AI (Alex).

Alex feature is retraining more than anything else...

Shield wall and hordes are cute the first few times you see them, but a dumber ai misuses those features. I like an ai the retrains and is just a little bit smater. Not to mention the ai is less likely to spread it's units out in tiny little stacks on the strat map on Alex. Thats another reason why I will never go back to BI.
