    1) Go to the faction array and open the GOVERNMENT node.
    2) Change the government type to gov_republic; right-click and delete the node "GOV_IMP" (the main one).
    3) Find another faction that starts as a republic, right-click and copy the node "GOV_IMP"
    4) Paste GOV_IMP to the faction you want to start as a republic. If you click on the node "GOVERNMENT::REPUBLIC" you'll see an Int value under the boolean. This is the election cycle. Feel free to change it.
    5) Open the region arrays. For every region belonging to the faction you're editing, you need to open the REGION_SLOTS. If any slots have a building, you'll notice that building has a government type: change it to gov_republic. Do that for the roads and fortifications too.

When you start a new campaign, your government should now be a Republic.

Whenever I try to edit the govt-type i.e. changing Denmark to an absolute monarchy and then I exit Esf editor, I keep getting an "unsaved changes" message even though I did go to File and Save. I followed the instructions but I can't same to make this change. What am I doing wrong?

I often find it easier to save when you save after EVERY change! Annoying, but it's almost always worked.

I edited Portugal's faction and region arrays to make it an Absolute Monarchy but every time I try to start a campaign, the game crashes.

I've tried the copy and paste function and whenever I try to paste the GOV_IMP file, it either pastes it inside the POSTS_ARRAY or the britian_FACTION, when I want it to paste in the gov_republiclGOVERNMENT node. Is there any way I can make it paste into the correct section?

Try using Taw's esf to xml. It makes copy and pasting much easier.

Will this work for save game editing too? Basically, I killed off France and I want to let them re-emerge as a constitutional monarchy.

If we try this for an emerging nation (say Columbia to start as a republic) do we need to change any region info?

I just experiemented on my own. That was faster than waiting for a response... but no, you don't need to change any region information so long as the nation hasn't emerged yet. You'll still need to change the govt_imp and change the government type in the faction overview, but that should about do it.

I noticed that some people where having issue about where to paste the GOV_IMP file:

Once you pick what nation your going to paste to, you should look like this:

    Colombia|Faction>Gov_Constitutional_Monarchy|GOVERNMENT

Next click on the first GOV_IMP folder, which should open another GOV_IMP folder: GOV_IMP>GOV_IMP

This second folder is the one you want to delete, and then right click on the FIRST GOV_IMP folder and paste the GOV_IMP folder from the nation that you copied.

Hope that clears it up a bit

How do you know the goverment id when you want to make a region to another faction? Like when the faction has only territories in America, but you want give it a territory in India. (without using hybrid). For that you need the governor id that will be for India. But when you see in the startpos.esf,it has only the governor id for america and not one for India. So which id thus it need in the region array (16th and 17the entry)
