Default Africa and the West - Military Conflict

I was wondering since the end of World War 2 what kind of conflicts have African countries had with Western countries. For example I know about the UN and US getting involved in Somalia in 1991. I know we could all talk about how up Africa is or how the West ignores it, but I want to know about any other military conflicts between Africa and the West or the rest of the world outside of Africa for that matter.

Well there is plenty of UN peacekeeping missions across Africa.

However, I suggest you look at British operations in Sierra Leone in 2000 during the Civil War. There is a relatively famous battle where SAS and SBS, as well as Paratroopers assaulted a group of rebels who had taken 11 British soldiers captive.

I read the book 'The Afghan' (It was fictional but based on real events). If that was anything to go by, the battle involved bayonet charges under heavy mortar fire and sounded quite brutal.

There is also the battle against Somalian pirates.

    There's the Portugese Colonial War.

"Bayonet charges under heavy fire" being the description for just about every (modern) British battle. Which leads me to believe that your media has slight habit of exaggerating these kind of things.

I have not once heard the operation mentioned in the British media. I have only read about it in books. In fact, I have never really heard of any bayonet charges being mentioned in the media- you have to go elsewhere to find this info. I don't think it is the sort of thing the media wants us to here about our conflicts- they are vicious, brutal and unforgettable for those involved.

Anyway, I am currently watching a documentary on it. I will post you a link if you like?

Edit: Watching the documentary, it seems there wasn't really a bayonet charge. They did fix bayonets however (As is usual in close quarter combat). So 'The Afghan' seems to have 'jazzed it up', although to be honest, it didn't really need much 'jazzing up'.

Ya, one of wars that shows French is cowards.

Anyway, we already have bunch of conflicts today in Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Chad, Sudan and (I hope not) may be in Magascar soon.

here's been alot of small action and miniature wars in Africa recently. Alot of the governments i understand are hiring former western soldiers as mercenaries to kill bandits, Guerrilla fighters, and pirates. And in Liberia's case the occasional intrusive international fishing boat.
