Default Timeline for Roman expansion, good if your looking for something new

So having played total war games for a while I have recently taken an interest in chronologically expanding. For Rome in Roma Surrectum I have found this really challenging because you are essentially spreading yourself thin across the world taking colonies. Especially in the early game. Of course, it requires hitting end turn ALOT but it can be rewarding as the computers generate lots of steam.

Below is a list of events I compiled converting BC to AUC, the calendar RS uses. Of course I'll keep it short, but 1 A.U.C. is the founding year of Rome, so most historians agree 1 A.U.C. = 753 B.C.

So mathematically one can deduce that subtracting 272 BC (Italy unification) from 753 BC = 481 AUC. Just to clarify however, some events took several years to occur, so Italy unifcation, you may start and take a few years more then what I put down.

So now onto the list (AUC):

    489 Unite Italy

    First Punic War
515 take Sicily (but not Syracuse), Sardinia, Corsica
    541 Syracuse – Sack it

    First Macedonian War
    548 take Illyrium
549 take Massilia (SE france, became roman ally against the gauls and carthage at the start of the 2nd punic war)

    Second Punic War
552 East, South coastline of Spain, Move through north Italy stop at Alps
553-554 Eliminate all Carthage from Spain, begin war with Spaniards

    Second Macedonian War
    555 Ambrasia, Thermon, Delphi
    557 Corinth, Thessalia, Chalcis

    Third Macedonian War
582-585 Take out Macedon, take all territories and redistribute Eastern ones to Thrace, north to Dacia if it is along the Danube River
(Spain should be conquered by now, with the Spaniards in the far North city as a Protectorate)

    Third Punic War
607 Capture Carthage, and the city south of it (BUT DONT DESTROY Carthage, they act as Numidians later)

    -----

This is what I have so far, any collabaration from other RS fans would be helpful as I am still reading about Asia Minor, Numidia, and egypt. On that note, good night, and I hope you have fun if you try this.

Good job, although we already have guide for Roman conquest:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=211211

During 582-585 (Third Macedonian War) you should only make the Macedonians and Greeks protectorate or allies and send some armies there. Whole Greece and Macedon were made province of Rome in 606 AUC (148 BC)

Western Asia Minor should be conquered too in 621 AUC (133 BC). In real life the last king of Pergamum, Attalus III testamented kingdom to Roman Republic but as this is not possible in RTW you need to capture their cities by force or bribe. Also conquest of Gallia Transalpina and Narbonensis in 633 AUC (121 BC).

i think that this guide is more helpful than the other one because it is in auc years, not in bc

Nice! This is a great guide, cool to see other people are interested in chronologically expanding. It's true he put it in BC, but it should be easy enough to convert to AUC. Overall I'm amazed he did all this footwork to find the notes.

    Thanks for the reference.

Well I have run into some other problems following this and it seems after doing some searches, modding AI behavior will be difficult. For example, on hard-hard, Seleucids get crushed just after you take Sicily 30 turns in.

Sure you can give Seleucids a whopping amount of cash, but then they go berserk on their neighbors and soon after 40 turns, they have captured the entire middle eastern area.

My newest experiment involves modifying the diplomacy numbers in Descr_strat.txt at the bottom.

    source: http://rtw.heavengames.com/rtw/mods/...html#diplomacy

So basically on a Medium campaign - Hard battle, I turned all the NPCs into tree huggers, setting aggression only on the britons (free people) and the rebels. So we will see how it goes from there. Also I set their cash at -150000 because I read that negative money makes the AI freeze in place.

Perhaps money scripts are in order and Ill be looking into them as well. The greatest challenge with R:TW is that although you want to play historically, the AI npcs are just too exciteable to obliterate each other.

If anyone else is facing this problem, I'd love to hear about it and what ideas and solutions you came up with.

    Thanks,
    Natachi

Actually its quite easy to stop AI expanding quick but it needs some work. Just at the beginning of the campaign train lots of diplomats and send them to all around the world. Then after every 2-3 turns use "toggle_fow" cheat to check the situation. If some faction is crushing smaller one and being super power, use the "add_money" cheat and give a lot of money to the faction wich is being crushed and also bribe enemy armies. So they cant expand no matter how many armies they send.

With this tactic in my campaign its around 640 AUC and the Seleucids, Ptolemaics, Parthians, Armenians, Pontos, Sarmatians, Bosporans, Greek cities, Iberians, Germans, Dacians and Gauls are still in the game. Even in the historical areas. (So seleucids are not in Greece or Gauls in Spain etc.)

Weird thing is that Germans and Dacians have become extremetely passive. They got a lot of full stacks just wandering around their territory and doing nothing. Like they are preparing for attack or something. I counted 14 full stacks + 2 almost full stacks + 1 half stacks around Treva and Goria in modern Denmark. Also there are many huge gallic fleets there.

haha wow thats crazy, so many barbarians :O

you must be excited to deal with that once you expand all through gaul and reach their borders!

well it looks like a Divine Guiding hand is needed then. i just learned earlier last night how to use force diplomacy. So far at turn 21 or so, only greek cities and macedon have had skirmishes with each other. To keep the middle east peaceful and historically "ready" for my arrival, I nuked all of them pretty heavily, so theyll have to regen back the -200,000 denari I gave them at the start + break the 5 way alliance between Seleucid, Pontus, Armenia, Pergamon, and egypt.. oh and parthia too..

haha im sure you guys might laugh but it really has worked so far!

lol i prefer to see the eastern factions kick the crap out of each other before I come steaming in. I always modify it if I see one of them becoming a superpower e.g: If Seleucid conquered Egypt and had the Ptolomiacs down to 1 or two settlements, i would use force_diplomacy to give the territories back to them and give Seleucids a big dock in money.

Good idea giving them all -200,000 at the start i might try that so I can focus on my main campaign.

Good guide too I might try it later on
