As far as I know, changing the names of cities is a piece of cake, changing the terrain is impossible to do.

well it it is easy to change the terrain before you start up the game but the texture you put on when your making the map can't be changed in game

just view it as the evil of the dark lord still corrupting the land if it bugs you that much

Just think as it being that badly destroyed it can't be 'fixed'.

the thing about the black lands is they were never fertile in the first place, mount doom saw to that effectively, it would take a lot more time then one has to play the game for it to actually change back, the land was blackend and destroyed, some other placeing in middle earth are still barren 1000's of years later such as dargorlad and the moronnan, it be like sending in a team of millions of people with dust pans and broom's lol, it will likly not be green or even near liveable for many a time, thats part of the reason that the name "orc encampment" was chosen over city names, becase they dont really live their like that, they are camping their on their way to war. only places's like nuren and the castle's would be livable (castles because they constantly get supplies from surronding settelements).

hmm i always thought tht lands on and around volcanoes was actually pretty fertile (like that volcanoe on sicily and the lands around vesuvius) something to do with ash being actually a v gd fertiliser i think

I'm not sure if that's always the case, some of the Hawaiian volcanoes are pretty bleak but you've got a point. I think it has to do with the regularity of eruptions. Does Mt. Doom regularly spew forth lava?

yeah but this volcano is a meth addict. There's no way it could be good for the surrounding community.

The land might have become fertile again, but not THAT fast. For over 8000 years, it has had a dark influence, so it won't be fixed in let's say 100 years.

look at the fourth age mod, i think thats an accurate picture of what the lands should be like at tht time, after mt. doom stopped spewing lava and ash all the time, the lands would eventually become fertile again, but at the time of the third age i don't think the lands around it would be fertile

Err... 8000? How did you come up with that number?

Sauron first started establishing himself in mordor in year 500 of the second age. Unless my math is horribly of that does not equal 8000 years until the end of the third age.

Changing the name of say Minas Morgul (and other cities) is very easy: you can change the name of the city/castle in the construction panel of the city/castle, just go to the name and delete it, and write your own I do it all the time when I conquer a evil town

From The Return of the King:

They had come to the desolation that lay before Mordor: the lasting monument to the dark labour of its slaves that should endure when all their purposes were made void; a land defiled, diseased beyond all healing, unless the Great Sea should enter in and wash it with oblivion.

    lol
maybe they were exaggerating for effect tho, i mean it's not impossible to terraform a barren land, look at what the moors did with spain, a bit of irrigation goes a long way

There is probably a deeper taint, the way Minas Morgul is tainted.
