Default Best Faction for An Army of Elite Infantry?

I currently am ordering the books on amazon because of all its rave attention on site here on TWC, which I consider overall a relatively good judge of stuff (yes really.)

This mod looks very well done and there are so many unique factions.

In order to make up my mind beforehand (otherwise Ill never start a grand campaign, im kind of wierd like that), what faction would you reccomend for an army centered around small but heavy elite infantry regiments that can outlast the opponent? Sort of like a roman legion? Are the Grejoys such a faction, as I cant pass up the opportunity to play with a faction which has the Kraken as their banner

    Cheers- fluff.

Play Greyjoys then. No difference at the moment, most rosters are horribly incomplete. Greyjoys are easiest to get into that mentality though. "Look ma, no cavalry!"...

"Five had been his brothers. Oswell Whent and Jon Darry. Lewyn Martell, a prince of Dorne. The White Bull, Gerold Hightower. Ser Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning. And beside them, crowned in mist and grief with his long hair streaming behind him, rode Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone and rightful heir to the Iron Throne."

Yes Ive noticed that rosters need work. But considering the greyjoys are a sort of norse faction, the vanilla heavy axemen and raiders actually work fine. Ive punished Lannister already with the norse axemen and sent them back home with thieir tails between their legs. Good times.

I did the same to Tyrell. I'm playing as Stark right now and their heavy infantry is good though their men at arms aren't quite as good as Aryn(or something like that). I tried the Greyjoys and I couldn't get very far because my finances were very low. Maybe I just like to blitzkrieg too much, but unless you can get their heavier axemen, they aren't a match for a well planned stark army IMO(and I've won several battles against them with odds of 3or2 to 1 against me.).

Players always beat AIs though, Raidon. Unless you have an extremely good battle AI, the computer doesn't stand a chance.

Yeah thats the thing...the AI simply zergs you with more men, thats pretty much the only way it can hope to defeat you. In ETW at least before the latest patch the AI could defeat you even if it only outnumbered you by a little, because combat revolved around firepower and not melee (and then they ruined it), but since Kingdoms/Mid Two games are all about sieges and the AI always attacks- two archers and two swordsmen can hold off whole stacks because they all rush the gate and then break.

Hopefully Westeros Multi Player will give us all some challenge though!

Speaking of which, storm, if you need someone to test for unit/faction balance in MP later on when you get that running, Ill be willing to help. Im reading the books now to get up to date.

If the mod ever expands to include Essos (the eastern continent), it would have the Unsullied as the most powerful infantry unit in the game. In Westeros as it is, it's probably either the Dornish spearmen or the Greyjoys who would be the heaviest infantry unit.

Unsullied mercenaries? Exotics available from port settlements (probably). Or for Dany's invasion whenever we get round to releasing an add-on for 1.0 when that's done.

Unsullied wouldnt beat knights... tighter formations and highly_trained with lock_morale... but not stronger than knights...

Unsullied beat a horde of Dothraki. I think they can manage a few measly knights

Depends of course on relative numbers, and more importantly, on whether or not the knights can get a clean charge or have favourable terrain (especially mud or broken ground). If they get bogged down knights can be vulnerable to most infantry, let alone Unsullied- but if they do get a strong charge they would cause a lot of casualties.

Hmm. True, Dothraki screamers were never great at the head on charge thing, preferred parthian shot tactics more I suppose...

Despite GRRM trying to convince me otherwise, I just can't see the Dothraki as a massive threat, they have terrible tactics. They are barely a shadow of the Mongols they are based upon.

    1. They don't use armor
    2. They don't use siege weapons, mongols were experts at siege warfare
    3. Mongols use superor tactics to maximize their advantages and exploit enemy weaknesses. They feign retreat to get the enemy to chase, then surround and destroy them. As seen with the Dothraki, they seem to engage the enemy at their strongest point to prove how powerful they are, like when they charged the Unsullied again and again rather than just shot at them from a distance.

As for the Unsullied, if they are given decent armor (they aren't sold with it, but are trained with heavy armor) they would probably stop a frontal knight charge pretty reliably.

Mongols also were the first to use battlefield artillery, and they were more disciplined than dothraki.
