Scandinavism, or Nordism, is a pan-(ethnic?)nationalist movement, both political and literary, that seeks to create close cooperation between the Scandinavian nations, or possible unification.
The Scandinavist movement began about the same time as the unification of Germany and Italy, the mid-19th century, by Danish and Swedish students in Scania. The idea of Scandinavism was to unite the three Scandinavian nations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, by appealing to their common history and culture, the so called "Three Brothers". The movement enjoyed a degree of support, but largely died out after the Second Schleswig War, in which Sweden refused to ally with Denmark.
The Kalmar Union could be considered the closest equivalent to a Scandinavian "nation". Norway has come under a Union with both Denmark and Sweden numerous times in history. Today, the Nordic Council is a largely dormant council that brings the Nordic nations together. With all members, with the exception of Norway and Iceland, part of the EU, and all members, except Sweden, participating in NATO, the Nordic Council is not particularly active.
The idea of Scandinavism is not seriously considered by the major parties of Nordic Nations.
Now, I brought this topic up for a reason, and not a history lesson. Are there any members here who support a common Scandinavia, or are Scandinavist? Is Scandinavism a serious possibility in the future?
