Teen suspended for going to girlfriend's prom

His Baptist school forbids dancing, rock music and hand-holding

FINDLAY, Ohio - An Ohio teenager has been suspended by his Christian school that bans dancing because he attended another high school's prom.

Officials at Heritage Christian School in Findlay had warned 17-year-old Tyler Frost that he would be suspended and prohibited from attending graduation if he went to the public school dance over the weekend with his girlfriend, according to The Courier.

Frost danced and held hands with his girlfriend, Rebecca Smooty, at the Findlay High School prom, attended by about 800 students, officials told the newspaper.

Frost says he didn't think going to the dance was wrong even though his fundamentalist Baptist school Ohio forbids dancing, rock music and hand-holding, a situation reminiscent of that depicted in the 1984 movie, "Footloose."

Frost didn't go to school Monday. Instead, he and his girlfriend are heading to New York for a Tuesday morning TV interview.

The teen says he's now getting Facebook and e-mail messages from around the world.

School officials said earlier he could complete his final exams separately to receive a diploma.

Ok, so beside the fact that the kid most likely knew that he was going to be punished accordingly for going to the prom, I've got a problem with this quote specifically,

his fundamentalist Baptist school Ohio forbids dancing, rock music and hand-holding

What the hell? Since when has the stigma of rock music come back? And holding hands? I know this is a private school but it sounds to me as if this kid most likely doesn't like the rules that are in place there, at least the rule he broke. Is the school right for punishing him for doing something that was outside of school? The kid is 17. Next year he'll be able to vote and go to war if he wants to. But don't hold hands young man!

    *sighs*

Doggone it, there's always one more Christian school/group that makes the rest of us look bad.

I guess according to that school, I'm going to hell. I've actually *gasp* kissed a girl I liked! Oh! The horror!

Ok, ok, this is good, let's roll with this.

So I've dated Persian, Black, French, and Filipina girls. And I myself am the supposed (according to this church probably) Satan-spawn of being a halfie.

Oh boy, I hope they have a special place in Hell just for me!

    I lol'd.

This is why we look at Ohio as a land of crazy folks.
You know the Creationist Museum that's in this state? It's adjacent to Ohio, in a county with a lot of Ohioan commuters. That state o'er yonder is a madhouse, I tells ya. A madhouse.

Jesus hated dancing and made a point of trying to ruin the futures of people who danced. It's well documented.

It's not even dancing that I'm so dumbstruck by. It's hand-holding.

    They can't even HOLD HANDS?!

I don't believe the kid was married to this girl, and since holding hands can lead to pregnancy (source not found ) the school was simply looking out for him. That he chose to disregard such compassion and instead put his eternal soul at risk is truly dispicable . In my opinion they didn't go far enough. Expulsion, lashings, whatever it takes to put him back on the straight and narrow.

What I want to know is how we can allow such hell-bound people as Thanatos to be our moderators. Its sheer lunacy.

Non-issue. Religious school has rule, student knowingly breaks rule, press makes a big deal about it to make fun of the religious folk, blah blah forgotten in a week.

It reminds me of 1984 the movie. Except instead of suspension they put starving rats in a cage on his face.

And it kinda reminds me of sense offence in Equilibirium.

Yes I know what you meant, I was making a funny. I also had Ghostbusters, Spinal tap, Beverly hills cop and about a dozen other well known ones to use.

You know 1984 was a good year for movies.

This would be a non issue if seen in a legal light. but this is the ethics forum, and as such I think it is fair if most people here interpret it in a moral as opposed to legal manner.

Yes the school's action is legally defensible but that does not mean they are behaving fairly. I hope they shut down so those poor kids can live life, instead of hiding it from immoral repressed Christians that should have no stake in anyones lives much less young peoples'. Plus, while this is total supposition, I doubt a school like that provides a very good education.

    Assumptions are never good...

Every April, Heritage students take the Stanford Achievement Test. On average, students score two grade levels ahead of the national average on this test. Individual classes are consistently in the 80th to 90th percentile on this test.

Thats from their website, and they may be lying but I doubt it.

There is a problem with education in that its become subsided dating. I realize that most in this forum are far to young to gain any sort of perspective on this sort of thing, but I've been out of high school for over 20 years now.

Its simply not that important at this stage that you are overly involved with sex at this age. Being this is a gamers forum, and glancing at the personal help section, I think for a very good many here its really completely a non-issue. They are not getting any, rules or no rules. Waiting a couple more years, does no harm.

Your education is the most important thing at this age, its the foundation, and schools like this one may be a bit harsh or odd, but they get the job done better than the US public schools by a long shot.

There's a difference between test results and an education. Test results simply show the student s have been trained to perform well in the examination. A good education implies teaching people to think well, communicate effectively, and giving them a broad, multi-purpose base of knowledge that they will find useful in the real world.

And not holding hands prevents this?

Test scores are an indicator of future academic success. Sure Mr. 420 might have a blast in high school and drop of college in 2 years, but guess who will be his boss?
