Default Life in the suburban lane

First, a big thanks to the RS team -- great mod! I'm nearly through my first campaign (as Rome, of course) and it has been a lot of fun, and very stable. I think I only CTD'd once thus far. Love the map, the skins, and the Legions. Looking forward to my next campaign.

My question is: what do the de-pop buildings do? I keep building them but I don't see any reduction in the pop growth rate for the cities where I build them. Shouldn't there be a corresponding drop in the pop growth rate for each level of de-pop suburbs I build?

They just don't work becuase happiness bonuses create higher population growth and cancel out the effect. It will be fixed for RS2 though.

I am fairly sure that they do work. I was using them on RS1.5b and earlier versions to slow down the population growth. To me this appeared to work. I mainly did it to slow down the growth so I could construct all the buildings for that level before being forced to build the next higher level government building (as I've found not doing so leads to unrest).

I've not played RS1.5c for any long time due to beta testing (RTR and RS).

I'm playing 1.5c, and I had wondered about the suburbs' decreases being cancelled out due to other buildings that increase the pop growth rate. However, if the pop growth rate shown for a city already shows the total amount of all pop-increasing structures, then the pop-decrease value from building towns/suburbs should be reflected in the overall pop growth rate shown, right? Thus, the overall rate of growth should still decrease by X (depending on which level of town/suburb) I build.

I must say that they also do work for me. As ISA Gunner said, maybe the effect is being cancelled by other buildings (farms, some temples, baths maybe, don't remember exactly at the moment). But I'm totally sure that they work for me and are really helpful in maintaining public order and health level.

Yeah, must be the temples that i build because it just doesn't do anything for me save make the population happier - which isn't too bad mind you.
