    Default Cloned_Character CTD

I just read that it is guaranteed that the game will CTD if all the starting characters listed in 'descr_strat.txt' for a faction are not shown in the family tree. What haooens is the game 'adopts' the characters not listed and 'clones' them with the same name......as soon as the clone dies, the game CTD's. I could cry. I was complately unaware of this bug. So needless to say, I'll have to fix this.

At least it's a CTD that won't happen in RS2.0. If that's any consolation. We know you hate CTDs!

I know....but it means all the work I did on historically named characters was for nothing!! They won't even work.

can't you simply edit the family tree to match the characters you've already got?

I'm working on it. Apparently EB ran into this same problem, so I'm using a 'version' of the way they did it to fix it.

I believe I have fixed the 'cloned character' issue without having to change any of the names or dispense with the historical characters. I made some 'changes' to the Romans and ran a campaign for a few turns....none of the 'non-family' characters showed up available for adoption. I then ran a 30 yr AI campaign, and everything appeared to run very well. Since my little 'experiment' worked, I'll move on to the other factions that have this problem.

Just had a CTD no message, doing an end turn from 547 winter on the new revision. Went back in and reloaded, made end turn and all appears well.
    Thoughts ?

It could be that this issue has been causing CTD's that I had no idea what to do about. If the cloned character dies...either naturally or in a battle, the game CTD's. It is supposed to happen later on in campaigns...I assume, as the character gets older. But many of them in RS2 are quite old anyway to start....for instance 'Hiero of Syracuse' is like 70 or something. So he might live to 905 in one campaign, or die at 74 in another. Which is why these things are random.

I have, however, tested three camapigns so far...two of 30 years, and one of 34 years as the Romans, Free Greeks and Seleucid...with the fixes in place, and there have been no CTD's or errors of any kind in the AI campaigns. As soon as I instituted the fixes, I also noticed that the characters weren't immediately offered for adoption. This was happening as the Romans.....after the first turn, Flaminius was offered for adoption every single time. It never dawned on me that he was one of the starting characters. But this was the character getting cloned if you accepted the adoption. It stopped as soon as I introduced the fix.

Now, even the children of the starting characters who aren't really 'family' become family members, even though their father and mother weren't part of the original family. I was a little concerned about this, because technically they shouldn't be 'family' either. But apparently any character that the GAME creates is a family member regardless of their relationship to anyone else.

Oddly enough, any character who is either the 'Leader' or the 'Heir' is ammune to this cloning, even if they aren't 'family'.
