Of course Obama's not going to pray in public, everyone would be able to watch him saying "Allahu Akbar. Subhana rabbiyal adheem. Sam'i Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal hamd." whilst bobbing up and down on his prayer mat.

If he did, he probably would've been harangued by the same Freedom from Religion wackjobs that demanding that he did not say ''So help me God'' at his inauguration.

I've always been fascinated with the U.S' obsession that its leaders be openly religious people. Surely, by what name a man calls god and in which way he prays is a private matter and has no bearing on his ability to be a capable civic leader.

    ^ This.
In the UK, our last PM had to wait till he was out of power before he became openly very religious.

Well it is to an extent, at least in law if not in practice, but I think that had been a faith other than Catholicism, Blair would still have waited till he left office to convert.
I can't think of any of our leaders in recent times who have expressed any particularly strong religious sentiments.

The public prayer ceremony was a Bush started thing anyway, not some time honored tradition.

I'll admit, I don't get whats important about him missing this. His personal practice of religion is his own damn business, and he is under no obligation to put his religious beliefs on display.

    Take it easy,

    ...... umm....

President Harry Truman first established the day as a national event in 1952. Reagan signed a resolution in 1988 to observe the National Day of Prayer each year on the first Thursday in May, and each president since has recognized this day with a proclamation.

    Thats from the article.

    But anyways...

Having a "Day of Prayer" doesn't make us any more spiritual, but I don't see whats wrong with it. I see no reason for him to skip it.

like there being more important things at hand than praying to some invisible man in the sky? I'd say that's a good reason.
