Yes its quite slow.It makes an attacking battle very hard for a phalanx player.

Well , it is historically accurate . Moving a line of phalanx units in proper formation was very hard to accomplish , and due to the formation and the very long sarissa + armor and other equipment makes it very heavy . And trying to run with it would be totally exhausting . Offensive tactics with the Phalanxes were used to lock in enemy units by a slow moving wall of spears and then use more flexible units to flank them while being locked in battle with the phalanx .

Phalanx based armies are supposed to be hard to use offensively . But once you get the tactics right you'll be winning every battle .

The biggest problem is turning with your phalanxes or phalanx line. They go all messy. It would be good if the phalangites would turn better(maintaining their formation better).

What you do is , you turn phalanx off turn the unit and then turn phalanx on . Turning with the phalanxes down in formation is hard to do .

There is a special ability button for phalanx units to lower the sarissas and to lift them up (straight up into the air)
When you are to turn a fixed phalanx unit , you have to order them to lift the sarissas and then turn around 180 degress or whatever you like . And then order them to lower them .

If this isn't sufficient clarification , would you like me to draw a picture for you?
