Sorry I dont mean to laugh at people who are going to lose their jobs but the whole Duke Nukem soap opera has been hilarious and I predict someone is going to get a book deal out of this to explain a question many people wonder about....WHAT HAS 3DREALMS BEEN DOING THE PAST 12 YEARS? Enquring minds want to know!

I still think it's all been a big joke.

I mean, look at the name. Duke Nukem Forever.

How long has it taken them?

    Exactly!

They never knew back then how funny the name would become.

At least other long delayed games like Prey and Stalker were eventually released. Now lets hope Alan Wake is being postponed forever like Duke, because that is also starting to take time.

They really only got themselfs to blame for this.
As much as I love Duke Nukem 3d I feel no sympathy for 3d realms.
They on purpose did the duke nukem forever crap while forgetting to well make the game.
Hell one of the "screenshots" they showed was just a duke nukem toy in front of a bunch of computer screens for crying out loud.
If they had just made the game they would probably not be in this spot right now.
    Oh well, good riddance.

No, they have the publishing rights, the development rights are still with the original owners and unless someone else buys them, no one will develop it.
I'm glad it's over though, that joke had run its course a long time ago. Here's a nice timeline with videos:

According to that link the Manhatten Project took less time than Duke Nukem Forever?

    Yep...

Formally designated as the Manhattan Engineer District (MED), it refers specifically to the period of the project from 1942–1946

The Duke deserves better though, I wouldnt want anyone else continueing the work on Duke Nukem Forever, but I would want to see a new Duke Nukem game being made from scratch.

There are too few gunwielding game heroes with personality these days. Most are very much replaceable.

The shooter genre needs the Duke.

The funny thing is, the Duke is the epitome of the cliche action hero personality.

Enlightening forum post by a now ex-3D Realms employee (thanks for the link Rapax):

"The 2001 trailer was 100% scripted cinematic, and not actual gameplay. They built specific demo maps just to record video from to make a trailer. Everything you see in that trailer was phony.

The typical work flow there went something like this:
Designer would be assigned a task (build a new map, rebuild an old map, polish a bit of a map, etc.). Designer would work on said task for two, three weeks, a month, all the while lower management would be looking over it and making sure it was going in a "good general direction." Designer would move on to another task. A month or two later upper management would finally look at the work and say, "It's all wrong, do it again." Rinse, repeat.

Entire maps would be done from the ground up, almost to beta quality, and then thrown out simply because no one would make decisions early on in the process. (Read up on Valve's 'orange box' method of design -- that's how you make games)

Another example of is the fact that there was one part of one map that was being worked on before I started working there. Nineteen months later and the same designer was still working on the same part of that same map... I'm not blaming the designer, it wasn't his fault.

I think the biggest problem that the company had in general is being self-funded. When you're a developer working directly with a publisher and you have milestones to meet it's a whole different ballgame. If you don't meet those milestones, you don't get any money. That right there will keep your project on schedule. If, however, you're funding it yourself, you don't really have anyone to answer to except yourself and you can quickly lose sight of just how much money is going out the door.
    "
He's absolutely right about the last part, too much time for any task makes you lazy.

Referring back to my masculine game characters poll a month or two ago: Marcus Fenix > Duke Nukem.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

That's because of all the 15 year olds who barely know the Duke.

I think it's a shame 3d realms goes down, I was still hoping some day I'd actually get to be the Duke again.

Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
