    Default Carthage

Does anyone use Carthage a lot? I'm just wondering how many people play as them...
Anyone have some info on their tactics? I love my Romans but feel I need to explore and when I don't see Legions I get confused hehe Hannibal seems like an interesting character and I think I will research more about him.

So, any Carthage users, some basic info about how you guys fight and who are your "premier" units ( Roman = Numbered Legions) would be awesome

    Thanks!

Well, Im not going to be a big help, sorry. But I was like you. I am always playing the Greeks because I love all the different hoplites. RS team did an awesome job of creating them making it more enjoyable for all geeks that love the Greeks.

I played as Carthage and it was actually really fun. Using war elephants to smash against the the enemy lines is always fun. Carthage does have a wide variety of units. I like to use the phalanx units to pin the enemy and instead of calvary running through the line, elephants! Its always satisfying watching the enemy fly high into the air. When campaigning secure your spot on the island by killing off Syracuse early and then prepare your self for a massive invasion against the Romans. That will be a big war. Very bloody and awesome. Make good use of Hannible. I was able to sack Rome but by not going through the Alps like I wanted to because of all the rebels armies. There is alot of full stacks that you would have to go through. So I just landed his army just south of Rome itself with the compliments of his war elephants. I had fun with it. Sorry i dont have any screenshots to show you.

Playing Carthage is like a nice North African holiday. It's good to take a break occasionally and play as them though, very fun and interesting. Attempting to dominate the Western Mediterranean, conquering Iberia and warring with Rome and the Celts. Makes for great gameplay.

Carthage are a great faction, I especially love the storys of Hannibal, a man that chose to kick the romans so hard in there butt that they would give up there war with Carthage about the Mediterranean trade.

    Indeed

Many players tend to skip the lower based unit types like velites, hastati, spear trowing cavalry and other light troops.

    This makes the diversity lesser.
For example didn't Hannibal have a army made of heavy units like his experienced african troops.
The main composition where in fact lighter troops (com-paired to the roman counterpart at least).
He won because he knew how, were and when to use his heavy and experienced troops.

Also the fact that an only heavy based army would cost tremendously much more than a army with lighter troops and a smaller core force of elites.

Luckily this is somewhat going to change in RS 2 as many lighter troops be the base of an Ai army.
Many unit will for example be based on a spear throwing unit, but still be able to take up the fight as a medium infantry force if needed.
They will be like the scutarii in RS 1.5.

So to come to an conclusion, the battles of RS 2 will be between two (or more) divers armies instead of RS 1's sometimes stack after stack with the same units.

    The Battle of Cannae:
The battle is counted as the single most costly battle counted in human life's until the outbreak of WWI.

    Carthage
    • Total:
    • 54,000
    • 40,000 heavy infantry
    • 6,000 light infantry
    • 8,000 cavalry

    Rome
    • Total:
    • 86,400
    • 40,000 Roman infantry
    • 40,000 Allied infantry
    • 2,400 Roman cavalry
    • 4,000 Allied cavalry

    Causality:

    Carthage
    • 6,000 killed,
    • 10,000 wounded

    Rome
    • 76,000 killed
    • 50,000 killed
    • around 11,000 captured

Of those where 80 Roman senators.
Just one of many fascinating thing aboute Hannibal Barca.

cool video The narrator is Pompey from the Rome series

So I peeked in that thread...Id post in there but its more than dead haha I saw a movie about Hannibal in the thread, will have to check it out.

But, does anyone have like a diagram of tactics? Similar to the Roman and Greek ones I always see?
Also does Carthage have a army similar to Rome? With a standard uniform and what would be equivalent to the Legions?

The elite african infantry is quite similar to the roman legions. Use them as your main infantry, replace first cohorts with the sacred band infantry, add some cavalry and light troops, and you have the carthaginian version of a late roman army.

Early in the campaign you have phalanx / spearmen units. So, it's very much like playing any Greek style faction. You do have the opportunity to recruit elephants but you need to use them wisely and not expose them too early in the battle - especially to javelin wielding units.

You can use the Sacred Band of Baal foot units to act as flank guards.

Carthage has some very nice cavalry units.

As others have posted the elite African infantry can be used in a similar manner to the legions. I still keep two or three elite phalanx units in my army....

The nearest settlement that has the iron resource (for weapon upgrades) appears to be in the Iberian settlements.
