So I was had some serious discussions about faith and religion with my suicide bombing pals back at home, and we eventually got really deep into philosophy of faith etc despite the lack of hashash.

Eventually we arrived at pig culling in Egypt and started talking about why pork is supposedly evil. One of the very learned brothers (from Kurdish Turkey) said something really interesting:

If eating pork is the only reason that prevents you from being Muslim, then eat pork, and be a Muslim

Just wonder what other pals in the faith think about this comment. We all agreed to it, though no one bought pork for the house yet.

Emphasizes what's important about faith, faith. Rather then arbitration. So many christians I know just worry about eating meat on good friday, rather then practicing the seven virtues.

Yeah its funny for example that many if not most Muslims who are in prison refuse to eat pork as if by not eating pork they can redeem themselves from the murder, rape, theft, or whatever crimes they did which led them to prison in the first place. LOLZ

the guy is obviously kidding. come on. assuming he believes that Islam is the true religion, and in that case he know (of course as he believes) that he's going to go to hell if he doesn't embrace Islam. in other words (just to get every body straight on this) he chooses pork over eternity in Paradise?

as for embracing Islam with his exceptions..i think it's up to God himself to decide if he is going to be judged as a Muslim or as a non believer.

The reason that muslims forbidden to eat pork as far as I know It's because The God order...yhis is an order just like shaalat to differentiating who the muslims and who the infidels altought I don't get deep learning about Islam but I believe that many another reason why pork being forbidden for muslim.... just for information the scientis found that many desease consist in pork may be the pig influenza one of them......

I'll expand on my earlier comment. There is a place for a theologically liberal version of Islam. In other words, a version of Islam that takes the Qu'ran to be inspired, but not the literal word of God.

It is the literal word of god, to say otherwise is too call the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) a liar. I've seen some brands of Liberal Islam and remained unimpressed, it was a farce.

In this framework aparantly inexplicable regulations such as the prohibition on pork could be disregarded.

Why? The Jewish people seem too have no problem in fitting with Western, while following their religion.

To not eat pork would be an expression of faith, not much different than following other dietary laws, keeping up five daily prayers, or keeping a constant state of cleanliness.

For that's what it is, in Islam, a case of misj, uncleanliness/impurity.

not only that but it is a cultural thing too.

In South Asia, pork isn't really eaten even by the Hindus,Jains,Sikhs or Buddhists.The only people I know of in India for example, who eat pork are (probably) the adiuvasi (tribals) and the Goans because of the Portugese colonists in the past who also happend to impose their religion on the local Hindus quite brutally .

Many Hindus located in Goa, Damão and Diu accepted cristianity openly and voluntarely in the 16th century. The Portuguese did spread their religion very actively, but not "brutally" as you describe. And don't bother mentioning the Portuguese inquisition, most of the people during that time in reality had to pay monetary fines for the absolution of any charges.

And why the long face, your making it sound as if those "poor" people and their descendents are unfortunate enough to be eating pork meat now. If anything, their culinary variety has grown enourmously, have you ever tried Goanese culinary, it's some of very best in the world, try vinha de alho/vindaloo/vindalho (yes, it has pork meat)

I am not saying they're unfortunate in eating pork, I am just saying that the consumption of pork is not common at all in India and it would have been even rarer in pre-colonial times.I would prefer Mughlai food over Goan cuisine any day,vindaloo was created under the Portugese so isn't really an Indian dish it's a good thing we expelled the Portugese out of the country in 1960 .

I put the long face since colonialism was a bad experience for my country.The Portugese were far more stubborn than the British who withdrew in 1947.

Vindaloo/vinha de alho/vindalho was originally a portuguese recepie and stil exists in Portugal, but in Goa their speciffic recepie for vindaloo evolved, incorporating various spices from both India and Brasil, I've tasted it and if you're a fan of spicy foods with real substance (meat, rice, etc) then it is divine, for the lack of a better term.
