    Default What to choose??!!

I have decided to come back to Rome after taking a few years off and spending time on MTW2 and Empire. Now I can choose between this mod and EB. I really have no knowledge of either aside from what I am reading here. Can anyone fill me in on the great points of this mod? How difficult is it? I am a pretty casual player who enjoyed playing Rome vanilla on H/H.

    Thanks guys!!!

This is a roman mod, M/M level. Expect a real fight, dont bother with diplomacy cause no ones listening, good luck, and a unit addon will be out soon,(I hope). This is the most challenging mod out thanks to LT.

I dont think you can play both once you have made the change, not modfolded.

this mod will over write vanilla files - so you'll need to either do a copy of vanilla first (recomended) and then install, or just not play other mods

You can make two copies on separate folders or partitions of RTW and play both mods , but SPQR rocks m8 . BI is also a good mod , but it covers other things then this , playing both mods will help you make an idea about them . Good luck and let us know about your opinions after a few days .

goodness! i went with SPQR just to try and wow! there is some serious stacks coming at you! Is the game too easy on E/M? I am kinda a laid back player, but I love being on the defensive, thats why I decided to try this mod. But I may need to work myself up to M/M. Maybe I will try E/M first. I cant stand easy battles so I will keep that at medium.

If I can get a handle on this mod I know I will like it. I find I get bored of conquer, conquer, conquer. I like how this mod puts you on the defensive first and you have to work to even begin to expand.

Well, this all depends on who you chose. If you choose Rome, be aware of the threats of Gaul and Germanina to the North, while keeping an eye on Hannibal and the other Carthaginian army to the South. Expect Sicily to be taken very quickly as the Greek Cities and Carthage have a problem with your existence. The Rome campaign is almost impossible at the start. I crushed Hannibal, and then immediately came under siege by two massive Gaul armies. It really is difficult. The Greek Cities is proving to be rather a fun campaign though.

this is because the mod is designed to be played as Rome. the other factions can be played but are usually a lot easier

i'm not saying don't play other factions just be aware that Rome is the only propably balanced campaign

easy battles is not something that SPQR is know for, yes the E/M or M/E settings are fine

you'll still probably find yourself on the forum looking for help (i did - lol)

if you need any help have a look at the help guide in my signature, it should be of some use

It's like a whole new game.

I suggest getting your "sea legs" with E/M or M/E until Sulla releases the unit add-on, and then starting a new campaign with the new units on M/M

    for sure. hehe.

are all battles as tough as the Hannibal one? I think I got it figured out after my third or fourth battle, but if they are all that hard I am in trouble. hehe

Personally I think it's pretty easy after you clear Carthage and Greece off Italy... You just have to consolidate a little and pick the right fights after that. Battle difficulty varies depending on who you fight, when and where. A lot of starting enemy stacks were custom created to kick the Romans around. That's why they're more challenging.

I'd say compared to vanilla or something, SPQR is hard, but not once you get the hang of it.

Some basics you need to know:

1.- Against Cartaginians, put your skirmishers on not fire mode, and use it only against Elephants
2.- your equites only for hit and run, never on a full charge
3.- Hold your line with Hastatis as long as you can, and try to flank the enemy line with your finnest troops
    4.- Against barbarians use shieldwall
5.- Move your general to improve moral

Take a look on the forum for more tips

@ Kitty: It's not that SPQR is particularly hard if you stick to your guns...but if you overextend yourself or get greedy, get ready to feel the pain.

I think that's why I like it. Consistency is rewarded, and when I get impatient, I get smacked. In Vanilla, I got impatient and I realized that there really weren't too many consequences.

I'm very systematic and tactical. Usually when I got impatient, it was because I was winning and got sick of the game right way. Thus I'd begin a new campaign. That's why I have a lot of crazy additional house rules, like no losing battles, family members or provinces.

    Strange little boy you are.

@ gord also use the house rules and activate the script to have more of a challenge.
