Icon2 [Tutorial] Traits and Ancillaries List and How to Edit Into Characters!

    05-04-09

*I realize that there are MANY more traits and ancillaries than those listed here. The patch file says so. Please PM me if you see any mistakes or additions, please don't post. Enjoy!*

    How to find the Traits/Ancillaries:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    1. Use Patch File Manager and open up patch.pack (be careful about this file, it is essential to Empire)
    2. Expand patch.pack
    3. Expand db
    4. Look into all the files that begin with either ancillary/ancillaries or trait.
    5. These do not specify the in game name of the trait/ancillary, only what the trait/ancillary is stored as in the pack.

How to Edit Traits/Ancillaries for Startpos
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    1) Get esf editor and open the target startpos.

    2) Expand this way...

    startpos\campaign_startpos\campaign_env\campaign_model\world\faction_array\faction_array\faction\character_array\character_array\character\character_details

    3) To change/add/remove a trait, add a trait under TRAITS

    4) To change/add/remove an ancillary, add an ancillary under agentancillary

    5) Now this is key. If you have a added a trait that affects MANAGEMENT
then you must go to agentattributes.

    6) On the 5th agentattributes change the number to whatever you need to. By default, a minister has 2 (3 stars) and so if the minister has the honest attribute, then this int value is 3 (4 stars).

    Star System:
-1 is no star in that attribute
    0 is 1 star
    1 is 2 star
    etc.

    List of agentattributes:
    command_land
    command_sea
    duelling_pistols
    duelling_swords
    management
    subterfuge
    research
    zeal
    land_defense
    land_siege_engineering
    morale_land
    morale_sea
    movement_points_land
    trade

    Traits

Traits define your characters in the game. There are several sets of traits.
There are five sets. The one represented by the black face on the purple
backdrop is a passive effect, that is, it will always be there.
The Books will mean it is related to research and the Crossed Swords means
it is effective only in battle. The Anchor will be part
of Battle traits, except it is for water. The Crossed Tools are industrial
traits. The Clasped hands are Religious Traits.

Traits are gained in two ways. Most battle traits are gained after a battle,
after a win or loss. The other way is to have them gained over time. Your
ministers, gentlemen, rakes, generals and leader will all gain some traits,
    both good and bad.

Traits can be lost just as easily as they are gained. When the trait is gained,
it will specify whether the trait is permanent or not.

    Which patch file?

The traits and ancillaries are found in the patch.pack.

I will edit in instructions to find them in the first post.

Well in that case you might want to add trigger information, too

Do any of ye know if there are some hidden traits that effect happiness?
Got a default -2 happiness to my middle class in a game (As GB turn..10 or so). I remember it being +3 happiness a couple of turns earlier and still only have a Capitalist and a Stallholder effecting middle class happiness (so should still be +3 instead of +1 ).

Checked my king as well, he's still just lewd and loose .

Oh and I have tried moving ministers around and ending the turn - still the same. Buuh! :/ May just have to soldier on but it is annoying.

No hidden traits but government type effects. They're not described anywhere I think (except for the government_effects table) but they appear in the settlement details with a little crown thingy I believe.

Ye I know of the government bonii. GB is a parliamentary monarchy so +2 happiness to both classes.
It is probably a bug then .

Tried a new game and got all my bonii now and checking each turn to see if I've lost some hehe.
The Capitalist trait is nice to have for a minister of treasury but it does not help keeping the nobility happy (yes was actually having trouble with them at 'average' taxes 'cause of my ministers).

Hmm.. maybe I should mod some traits to help the middle class a bit more... .

Nice list but pretty useless for modding. These traits and ancilliaries is what shows on the characters in the game but if you put them in as traits in your character list your game will CTD. Why becourse the trait names are not used in the character list. Let me explain. If you for instans have at character who in the game have the trait "Capitalist" then the program name for this is "Miser" and a value of 1 to 5. So if I give one of my characters the trait "Miser 3" then in the game he will be a better than average capitalist, so you see you can´t use any of these trait names for modding. OR have I completly missed something????????

You are correct the actual names are in the main.pack and patch.pack files under db in the trait_ability_effects file or if you can't open it with the Pack File Manager, you can check it in the trait_level_effects file.

    For example:

Aggressive Attacker is known as C_General_Attacker_Good

Aggressive Commander is known as C_Admiral_Attacker_Good

A Good Dutchmen is known as C_Admiral_Dutch_Seamanship.

    and so on.

I have been testing this and reporting it here http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=237126.

The traits and ancillaries do work but it will not update the character's ability or stars automatically maybe it was because I was editing the savegame. As it is manually updating the abilities and stars of each character after adding any trait or ancillary is cumbersome.

Finally make sure to cross check any trait or ancillary that you add in against the exclusion files as using an anti-trait or anti-ancillary will cause your savegame to crash during loading.

    -Everyone

I am currently working on putting everything together in a way that normal people will understand it.
The hardest part of all this is making it look nice. If you wanted, I could just throw you jumbles of information and let you sift through it... But I don't think anybody wants that.

    -Nissum

Sorry if you didn't get what you wanted. I had not put any mod information yet. The mod information is updated now.

UPDATE: Not all of traits have in game display titles yet (I have to do research, if anyone wants to help out, please pm me a list of traits display names that are not listed)

    Thanks all.

Thought it sounded a bit harsh afterworth and that wasn´t my intention, sorry if you got it the wrong way. I think you all do great work in here. I am not a super modder but i am a bit of an historian, so if I can contribute with any historically fact please let me know.

In the "patch_en.pack" ("ge" for German, "fr" for French, "sp" for Spanish)
    /text/localisation.loc

Thank you. What then is the purpose of the local_en.pack file? Is this the release equivalent of the patch_en.pack file? I have found these descriptions in this file too, but modifying them didn't have any effect. I'm guessing these changes are overwritten by the patch_en?

Yes you're right. The "local_en.pack" gets loaded first and then the "patch_en.pack" overwrites the "local_en.pack".

Traits table complete. I haven't looked at this in a while. I should mention those traits are only for characters, and do not include "Honourable Service" traits which have no effects, but come with titles (Knighthood, Baronage, etc.)

Ancillary will be updated whenever I get to it.

I noticed there is a second row beneath each trait (and INT type variable) if you look at the character slots in the esf file. I thought this was to show how many "ranks" you have from each trait. That true?

EDIT: Nevermind. I think I figured it out. Using DB Editor I looked through the character trait levels DB and noticed the threshold rank to get to each level of the trait.
