After reading The Road last year I was pleased but a bit wary when I heard they were making a movie of it. I had visions of a Speilberg mawk-fest turning a stark and grim story into schmaltz or, worse, some idiot trying to make it into an action movie.
The first good news was that John Hillcoat was directing. After the great job he did on The Proposition - another bleak story set in a stark landscape - this was a great choice. As was the choice of Nick Cave for the soundtrack. But the best news was the casting of Viggo Mortensen as the Father. Throw in Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron and you've got the makings of a great movie.
No trailer is available yet, but the production stills I've seen look pretty amazing. They shot a lot of it on a streach of abandoned four lane highway in Pennsylvania as well as on coal mining slag heaps and in abandoned industrial sites. Other footage was shot at Mt St Helens and in parts of New Orleans that have yet to be reconstructed after Hurricane Katrina.
The first review I could find was posted on aintitcoolnews back in February and apparently it's from someone who saw a rough cut of the film. From the sounds of his glowing report, it's going to be one to wait for.
Review HERE.
After films like 28 Days Later and the brilliant Children of Men, it's good to see we're going to get another intelligent post-apocalypse movie.
