    Default RIP Jack Kemp

Sadly former Rep and HUD Sect Kemp is dead...one of a dying breed in the GOP, an actual conservative. It was actually Kemp and William Bennett that got me interested in politics waaaay back when I was 17. Sad to see the man pass on, I thought if he had actually got the support he wanted/needed at HUD we'd have avoided the housing bubble since the same basic goal would have been achieved of people owning where they lived.

The NY Times is a fair obit, but this says it all as far as I am cincerned:

Mr. Kemp’s other great cause, in his 18 years in the House and for three decades thereafter, was to get his party to seek more support from blacks and other minorities.

“The party of Lincoln,” he wrote after the 2008 election, “needs to rethink and revisit its historic roots as a party of emancipation, liberation, civil rights and equality of opportunity for all.”

Mr. Kemp won his House seat in 1970 because of his celebrity as an all-star quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, twice champions of the American Football League. He connected his concern for minorities with his respect for his black teammates, especially the linemen who had protected him from pass rushers.

Vin Weber, a former congressman from Minnesota and a close friend, said Mr. Kemp would often say, “I can’t help but care about the rights of the people I used to shower with.”

Mr. Kemp was a football star turned congressman and the Republican vice-presidential nominee in 1996, but his greatest legacy may stem from his calls for sharp tax cuts.

Well for me the biggest plus for Kemp was none of his ideas, beliefs etc were deeply rooted in "god". He was like Reagan (and to lesser extent Mccain) so it gave him a ton of credibility even with people who disagreed with him.

    I supported Readan's policies.

More specific to this thread -- Reagan supported Kemp's policy ideas, not the other way around.

Brilliant! As pointed out by Viking it was the other way around...its why Kemp was viewed so favorably because he was basically man who thought up policy rather then just ran around following which ever way the wind blew. Kemp was a supply sider, one of the forces behind it but he was by his own admission a "bleeding heart" conservative. Its a shame his work at HUD was sabotaged by other Reagan officials and Democrats in congress.

I agree that his kind are a dying breed, not only in the GOP, but in politics in general. ''Long gone are the days where people entered politics to DO something, now they enter politics to BE someone'' - Margaret Thatcher

supply side economics is solely responsible for the current world financial crisis, and I pray for a day when it is destroyed.

lol "his kind" if you think kemp did anything but make petty plays for power and courted his base you are sadly misguided about the world.

maragaret thatcher was a fool if she thinks anyone ever got into politics to do anything other than attain power.

Politics is about (attaining) power and Thatcher was a fool but she's right about politicians.

Suggestion, read Plato's The State and you might learn a thing or two about politics.

Aye, human greed, had nothing to do with it.

No actually stupid greed and idiotic bone head moves is what caused the current financial crisis, blaming supply side is like blaming the road for a moron who drank too much plowing into a bus of nuns.

Actually Kemp went against the base of GOP and tried to expand the party by being more moderate and he especially pushed hard for republicans to appeal to blacks and other minorities. He wasnt an angel, no one is but he was primarily an idealist.
