Default Media flu frenzy causing mass hysteria.

This whole time that the media has been ranting on and on about swine flu i've been laughing thinking, well they did the same with bird flu... nothing came of that, 10s of thousands die from regular flu a year and nobody (now only 1) has died in the US.

However people who are ill informed (or just stupid) and relied on sensationalist media outlets are crowding hospitals for having a runny nose. Seriously, I wish something could be done about these idiotic media outlets. I'm sure more deaths are going to come of their stupidity of blowing this into being the next bubonic plague and filling already overcrowded hospitals with people who are not sick than anyone would have EVER of died of swine flu if it were never reported. This disgusts me and only gives further reason for the various outlets to die off, especially in my City of Chicago where ALL the papers are going bankrupt or have already.

Even though I hate 24/7 news stations (all of them) CNN did a story on this:
    http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/05/02...als/index.html

I wish something could be done with this Flu hysteria without limiting freedom of press.

The issue is not how many people are being killed by this disease, the issue is your doctors do not know how this disease will react with your immune system. It could be that the virus will pass without any difficultly, but it also could be that the opposite may happen. With that said, my Lord has noticed that your media fails to highlights the steps you Humans are taking to prevent the disease from spreading. My Lord believes these precautions will be effective in stopping the plague in its tracks.

Kanaric, Rep + from me for the comment.

I have posted professor Edward S. Herman article in Political Academy here, about anti Serbian media frenzy during 90' ..In short, it is simple rule in media - good news is not news - the worst - the better. They do not care who is is going to pay, they will not...For example that scum who got Pulitzer prize 1993. for photo of Serbian held "concentration camp" on Time front page, deserves firing squad.

Wow, I know I shouldn't respond to this, but was exactly is your deal? What kind of victim complex have you got? It's completely off-topic.

Mooooooving on and being less insulting and off-topic myself:

well they did the same with bird flu... nothing came of that, 10s of thousands die from regular flu a year and nobody (now only 1) has died in the US.
I think it is only prudent to exercise utmost caution at the moment for we do not yet know the full "behaviour" (for lack of a better word) of the virus and have not yet contained it.Better be safe than sorry.
Of course, stupid media reports will always happen, fearmongering is just too profitable.

And the government of my town is under quarantine. Wheee?

Anyway so far this swine flu is nothing special really.
Your body can fight it and if you got issues there is help for it.
Is it just me or does these "killer" virus/bacteria/sickness always appear during the summer ?

    Yeah, nice. US probably.

Actually the US is being very even-keeled about this whole thing. We did not close the border, or stop flights to and from Mexico, or screen people coming in from Mexico. The last was not done due to racial profiling. Thats brilliant...

Multiple countries have slaughtered there hogs, even though you cannot catch it from hogs. And France, banned travel to and from Mexico. EU came fairly close to doing the same.

    so...

And overall, I don't see the mass hysteria.

I'm just upset that there's people who are STUPID enough to stop buying pork. Those people should be shot.

They should especially stop buying chorizo and jamón, as this could result in a dangerous hybrid of the Spanish and the new swine flu.

USA ain't doing very well in the prevention of the disease at least, so I guess mass hysteria in that sense is justified. In Europe, most countries have quarantined the suspected infections and their possible contacts quite efficiently.

Where as in the US its possible that the infection has spread into every state already.
In fact, this current outbreak might have originated from USA in the first place, and only then gone to Mexico. http://www.hs.fi/ulkomaat/artikkeli/.../1135245652470

It basically says that CDC thinks its possible that the outbreak may have erupted from California, since according to Washington Street Journal, a 10-year old Californian boy had symptoms as early as March 30. but it wasn't until mid- April that the full diagnosis was finished.

Also a Californian 9-year old girl fell ill on 28. of March. Neither had traveled to Mexico, but the latter lived near the border in San Diego.

Mass media live of mass hysteria, nothing new.

The flu is the most lethal disease out there and if it has the 'right' abilities you should be worried. Hysteria doesn't help though, it usually makes matters even worse.

On the cold afternoon of February 5, 1976, an Army recruit told his drill instructor at Fort Dix that he felt tired and weak but not sick enough to see military medics or skip a big training hike.Within 24 hours, 19-year-old Pvt. David Lewis of Ashley Falls, Mass., was dead, killed by an influenza not seen since the plague of 1918-19, which took 500,000 American lives and 20 million worldwide. Two weeks after the recruit's death, health officials disclosed to America that something called "swine flu" had killed Lewis and hospitalized four of his fellow soldiers at the Army base in Burlington County. The ominous name of the flu alone was enough to touch off civilian fear of an epidemic. And government doctors knew from tests hastily conducted at Dix after Lewis' death that 500 soldiers had caught swine flu without falling ill.Only young Lewis died from the swine flu itself in 1976. But as the critics are quick to point out, hundreds of Americans were killed or seriously injured by the inoculation the government gave them to stave off the virus. On March 24, one day after a surprise loss to Ronald Reagan in the North Carolina Republican presidential primary, Ford decided to make the announcement to the American public.Congress still had to appropriate the money, of course, and that wasn't going to be easy. Even before official congressional consideration of the plan was taken up, there were forces arguing against it.The president and his experts prevailed, however, and on Aug. 12 Congress put up the money to get the job done. The mighty task was put into the hands of a charismatic 33-year-old physician for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Dr. W. Delano Meriwether, a world-class sprinter who still competed in track meets. Now he was in a race for life, or so he thought. Meriwether was given until the end of the year to get all 220 million Americans inoculated against swine flu.By Oct. 1, the makers had the serums ready and America's public health bureaucracy had lined up thousands of doctors, nurses and paramedics to give out the shots at medical centers, schools and firehouses across the nation.Within days, however, several people who had taken the shot fell seriously ill. On Oct. 12, three elderly people in the Pittsburgh area suffered heart attacks and died within hours of getting the shot, which led to suspension of the program in Pennsylvania.Jersey pressed on with inoculations, however. Through the fall, even as more bad reports about the side effects of the vaccine came out, thousands of mostly older people in Greater Trenton lined up outside health centers, schools and firehouses to get the shot, sometimes waiting for an hour. One of them was Lawrence's Mary Kent, a 45-year-old mother of two teenage boys who couldn't tie the ribbons on Christmas presents only days after she got her shot at the Trenton War Memorial in early December. On Dec. 16, increasingly concerned about reports of the vaccine touching off neurological problems, especially rare Guillain-Barre syndrome, the government suspended the program, having inoculated 40 million people for a flu that never came.By year's end, Jack Kent knew his wife was seriously ill and started reading all about the side effects of the president's flu inoculation, especially nerve problems like those his wife was experiencing.Even before Mary Kent died an invalid at age 51 in January 1982, Kent had joined the hundreds of Americans who filed suit against the government on behalf of children left without a parent due to fatal side effects from the swine flu vaccine. The swine flu case of 1976 forever reduced confidence in public health pronouncements from the government and helped foster cynicism about federal policy makers that continues to this day.

Sorry for the length of the story but i would say its interesting
