First game I started was with the Greeks and started it on hard(campaign) -hard (battles). However that turned out to be rather easy. In general I think the battles are fair at hard if it weren't for the Spartans... Since you start off being able to build them in 2 of your cities and having a lot of income I could build several armies consisting of spartan hoplites (and some archers and stuff off course). I never lost a battle with those guys. So it wasn't long before I was able to take Rome (even those SPQR armies couldn't stop my rampage:p)
After that I started a game on VH(campaign) - H (battles) with the romans. That was a different story... Hannibal is still being a pain. I've lost a lot of troops fighting those Carthaginians, but I'm planning a counter attack after I (hopefully) kill one of their armies that's sieging one of my cities. In the north the Gauls are invading as well and have pretty much killed of my army. However I managed to kill several of their armies while they were trying to take one of my cities and I think I have them under control. But on top of that a army of Greeks landed in Italy and has besieged one of my cities, but I think I'll be able to fight them off considering they haven't brought any Spartans along. The campaign is really "very hard" and considering the enemy still have superior troops so are the fights. quite a challenge indeed...
I've also started a new game with the Germans on VH (campaign) - H (Battles). This on the other hand has so far turned out to be quite easy. I decided to first build up a bit before starting war with anyone. To my surprise my allies have so far honored our alliance (which is nice and couldn't be expected in RTW). I've now started my invasion of Britain (I landed my army and waited for them to attack me, so our mutual allies would be on my side). But let me tell you, that island is hard to take... Looked like they were waiting for me, they send army after army at my landing party! Luckily I could hire mercenaries and could bring in fresh troops from the mainland. I've now taken London (or whatever it's called) and have killed everything they've send at me. It's now only a matter of time before I have the entire island.
The reason I'm not playing the battles at very hard as well is because (at least in RTW) the enemy's troops become unrealistically strong. To a point that it really becomes annoying. Especially with archers, theirs cut me down like grass while mine didn't seem to be able to make a dent in a cup of butter (Dutch expression)
Overall I think Very hard (campaign) - Hard (battles) is right for me. that way it's quite challenging while the battles can still be fun.
On which difficulty are you people playing?
