    Icon1 Performance reminder for RS

i had originally posted this in the SPQR forums but since this info isnt really MOD specific and i also Play RS i wanted to make sure people in this mod would benefit also in case they are having the same problem that i did.

So i had recently upgraded my PC and after coming back to look at the spqr forums i decided to reinstall ROME and play another SPQR campaign. However i noticed that my game would lag and having the computer that i do i wouldn't expect the game to lag at all. So i thought there might be something wrong with the hardware after doing a search on this site i came on some info that basically changed the way my entire system runs now lol.

    I have a
quadcore AMD Phenom 940 overclocked to 3.45
a gtx 285 overclocked as well
    8 gigs of ram
    and an 850 wat PSU

with this rig i was getting lag with an army of about 8 or 9 thousand on screen (with NO antailaising)..... after reading through some forums posts i realized that something was not right. Well long story short i found out that having a bunch of USB devices hooked up to your PC can sometimes slow down your computer. So i unhooked all non essential things (including external hard drives, which i suspect were the culprit) And BAM my computer was freakin BLAZING fast, it was nuts something was seriously slowing down my computer by about 50%

So now i can handle a 25000 man army with no slowdown whatsoever with 16Q antailaising with every graphic option on my card driver forced to super quality and running on my 40inch 1080P samsung the battles are glorious!!!!!
oh and a little something i noticed also was that when i put rome on 1920x1080 resolution which is native for 1080P display my refresh rate automatically went down to 24hz which is not cool for gaming (it should be 60) I also noticed that it did this with other games as well (crysis warhead, Company of heroes) well the work around that i found is to go into the NVIDIA control panel and under "Manage Custom Resolutions" create a custom resolution of 1920x1080 at 60hz and the card will force anything that uses that resolution to 60hz. That was something that i tried to fix so many other ways and was racking my brain, so now that its fixed i wanted to share with the community in case anyone else plays on their 1080P TV. And if you want to check what hz your tv is running at most newer TV's have an INFO button on the remote which tells you the resolution the TV is currently on and the refresh rate (which is the hz)

anyway i just wanted to post this in case anyone else had the same problem or maybe just wants to try running your system with the bare essentials plugged in maybe youll see a performance increase as well!!

And the nice thing is that this basically fixed a lot of problems i had with all my other games as well (they were performing poorly as well)

uhm, i have a quad-core cpu too (Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz) with 4Gb Ram and ATI 3560 series 512 to 1920 MB and i do not definitely have lag problems either in RTw or MTw2 mods playing always with huge units size and the highest graphic settings possible, on the other hand since i bought my pc until now i noted some speed decreasing particularry when i turn on the pc or when i start softwares...i have got too several USB devices always hooked up the pc...i'm going to try remove some and looking for speed increasing...
    Thank you for the tips

Oh wow, thanks. I actually have been having a few lag troubles with my PC recently (which previously was able to play large battles easily), and I've had several things plugged into my USB ports while playing, so I'll try this out later.

    Again, thanks mate.

Mine isn't on same spec - only a dual-core AMD - but just curious, were these devices plugged directly to your PC or via a hub? I use a hub for devices which don't need direct power - I try to leave only a keyboard/mouse/printer and those things which complain abut hub.

Well obviously you are not worthy of that PC if you've been mistreating it like that. Want to swap?

I'd like a new motherboard and better processor , but that will be a long time in coming. In the meantime, all I've got is a X1650 Pro, which limits performance but I've got my eye on an EVGA GeForce 9800 GT with 512 Mb RAM and 256-bit memory processing, since anything bigger would require more wattage than the 650W PSU I got recently. That, and it'd probably fry my motherboard w/o more case fans.

Hey... I have a few troubles as well but... it's not USB devices connected. (it might be the processor, since Rome doesn't exactly know what multi-core is)

My PC specs (3 of the most important I guess) would be:
Intel Quad Core @ 2.5 GHz
    4 GB DDR3 RAM
    Nvidia GX-2 something, 1 GB DDR3

The problem isn't so much with playing battles, which go great, as with fast-forwarding. So I am curious if there's any solution to the fast forward thingy. If I fastforward with more than 2k troops or something like that, the framerate drops severely, although it seems to be more than just framerate drop, I'd rather say the game slows down considerably. I haven't yet had problems with normal game speed, but... it's kind of annoying to wait troops to get into position at normal speed, especially in battles with reinforcements.

    Any ideas?

i think thats normal...my battles slow down also when i hit the 3x times or whatever that is, its fine with the 2x speed but it still gets choppy with the highest speed..its fine if i dont have 2 full stacks but when its 2 full stacks i have that problem, its no big deal for me since i usually only use the 3x speedy when im pretty much done with a battle and by then the enemy's 4 thousand plus troops are around 4 hundred lol. anyway for the start of battles i just run at 2x speed if im in a hurry but since i turn of the battle times i just take my time usually and enjoy the battle as it plays out. im usuaed to playing SPQR where every man is valuable so if it takes me an hour to fight en entire full stack so that i have the least amount of losses then thats what i gotta do especially when you know your legion has to fight another 2 full stacks after that battle....
