Default A suggestion regarding the Marian reforms

I have a suggestion regarding unpinning the Marian reforms from the Romans. Not sure if this has been suggested before, but what about creating an small unreachable region (maybe in the southwesternmost limits of the map) with the italy hidden resource, and giving it to the Roman rebels? Of course, remove all recruitment options and likely building options as well.

The effect of this (hopefully) will be that the normal Romans can trigger the reforms the normal way in Italy, but if the Romans happen to be wiped out before then, this is where the unreachable settlement comes into play-- with steady pop. growth, it will eventually reach huge city size and trigger the reforms. A side effect is that the Roman rebels as a faction will not be wiped out early in the game.

I'm not familiar with modding, so I'm not sure if this is a viable solution?

I like very much this idea, if it is applicable!

What effect do the reforms have on other factions, other than the enhanced general's bodyguards?

GCS gets the Periokoi Phalangites, Carthage's Civic units get +2 exp (making them equal to Libyans), Gaul gets Heavy Swordsmen and loses Gaesatae, new bodyguards all around. TSE might get its 2 legionary units too...

Ah, thank you. I suspect this idea would work marvelously, I'd use it.

Once the Post-Marian Project comes into more effect, this could be a very good solution to the fact that rome often dies at the hands of the player...

Seems a fairly straightforward way to do it without messing with the scripts. I can see a possible issue with factions that have the "outlast rome" objective though.

AFAIK nobody needs to outlast the Roman rebels to win.

But once you kill rome then roman rebel will become rome itself so you must practically kill them both.

That is true only with loyalty on. Anyway, one city factions tend to die out after a while because they don't get new family members often enough.

Could we simply not use a background script at a certain date?

Yes... But right now, I think all the changes are centred enough around the Romans that its not necessary. If and when PM comes into effect, forcing the Marian Reforms to go off at some point in the game will be important.

One solution could be swapping greek and roman culture.
This way you could just replace the italy hidden resource AOR and spread it to ensure the reforms...

Other factions can be rigged to trigger the reforms?

Any faction with roman culture can trigger the reforms.

Don't know if it would be possible as I don't know much about modding, but could you not set the event to trigger at the Pro-Consuls Palace at 12000 Pop. stage? Or is it hardcoded?

The trigger in that respect, as far as I know, is hardcoded. But you can modify which cities can trigger it, and maybe some other bits...

Side question, but maybe the reform trigger could be added to Rome itself, then? That's always the city to reach huge first in most of my campaigns.

But you don't want it to trigger too fast... If anything, later on from how it is now. The problem is making sure it triggers every single time...
