PHALANX FORMING RIGHT ANGLES!
1.DOES anyone know how to prevent this strange and a little annoyoing occurance .it happens when fighting another phalanx as they engage the enemy phalanx seems to form a right angle .the front half engages the rest just sticks out!!
2.when flanking a phalank they sometimes about turn to face and fight pretty impreessive for a couple of thousand men closly packed carrying 21 foot pikes

Re: PHALANX FORMING RIGHT ANGLES!
1) Switching off guard mode prevents this from occuring.
2) Unrealistic, yes, but inherent to the engine. There is nothing that can be done about it.

It will make your soldiers try to close in on the opposing phalanx, which might give you more losses. It is also likely to break your phalanx-line, it might make your phalangites draw their swords, and it will tire your men. Therefore, I'm not so sure putting guard mode off is a really great idea strategy-wise, but feel free to do so.

Re: PHALANX FORMING RIGHT ANGLES!
True but annoying. Engaging it a close and realistic formation is always nice, especially for hoplites, phalanxes and romans. Usually for units like those, if I'm attacking, I just march them up to within a foot or two from the enemy and turn on guard mode. They'll charge anyway and I'll maintain formation.

ummm you can move your phalanx behind the enemy instead of clicking the enemy to attack. press backspace when you need them to stop

Re: PHALANX FORMING RIGHT ANGLES!
One of the things about phalanxes that the Rome engine does not cover well IMO is that the Macedonian style phalanxes, historically, were used as a single unit and approach the enemy with a line of spears. They'd fight like a wall of spears and fight in a single line.

Re: PHALANX FORMING RIGHT ANGLES!
just go in and out of phalanx mode and it will do it correctly=)
another problem is that if you manage to flank a phalanx the entire thing just turns around
huge problem

Re: PHALANX FORMING RIGHT ANGLES!
we 'er never going to truly get a macedonian phalanx battle apart from the very long line of phalangites they were also very deep!! but just want to find a way to control what we have got effectively .
