Default Conservatives more likely to believe Stephen Colbert is serious

    Really?

A group of researchers at Ohio State University have discovered that conservatives are more likely to believe that Stephen Colbert, host of the wildly popular comedy show The Colbert Report, actually means what he says when he slams liberals on air.

Researchers collected an on-line survey from 332 participants enrolled in undergraduate communication courses at “a large mid-western university.” The respondents were aged 18 to 40 and the majority described themselves as politically independent, rather than Democrat or Republican.

Respondents were shown a three-minute clip of Mr. Colbert interviewing Amy Goodman, a radio host with Democracy Now!, which, according to the host, airs just before Anarchy Later! In the segment, Mr. Colbert blasts Ms. Goodman for being a “super-liberal lefty,” and gets into an argument with her over the merits of embedding journalists with the military. Mr. Colbert points out that he underwent embedding training at the U.S. military facility in Fort Dix, N.J., and that the sub-zero temperatures prepared him well for embedding in Iraq.

Participants were asked to rate themselves on a scale ranging from “very liberal” to “very conservative.” They were also asked whether they believed Mr. Colbert was using satire or whether he was only pretending to be joking, and actually meant what he said. The researchers found that political conservatism was a strong indicator that the respondent would believe that Mr. Colbert actually meant what he said. In addition, conservatives were more likely to believe that Mr. Colbert himself was also conservative.

“This set of results supports the idea that conservatives not only processed the messages as targeting liberals, but also processed the source as being conservative, Republican, and disliking liberals,” the researchers wrote.

“By contrast, liberals perceived Colbert as just kidding and did not perceive the source as conservative, Republican, or disliking liberals,” the researchers went on to say.

Disappointingly, however, the study offers no indication whether any conservatives have tried “Formula 402” – Mr. Colbert's “premium man seed,” which he markets on the show for women looking to conceive.

I'd guess that conservatives are less likely to know who Colbert is and therefore less likely to know what to expect.

First question should be 'Did you recognize the man giving the interview?'

    Oh wait, ON LINE survey.

So what we are saying is zero science here, carry on being smug

I agree, as the first time I heard the guy I thought he might be serious (he pretends to be a conservative), but then I quickly realized what channel it airs on. Plus, if you listen to him for a minute or two, you can realize hes just a comedian. A conservative political comedian should strike anyone as strange, as thats the domain of the lefties.

Mr. Colbert attacks conservatives just as much. He does so by acting ridiculous and radical. It's quite impressive actually.

If you don't know, Amy Goodman is right and Stephen Colbert is a liberal.

Colbert attacks everyone, and if they can't realize he's actually being facetious, that's..... pretty sad.

Considering millions of people think Two and a Half Men is funny I'm not surprised a few people think the Colbert Report is serious.

Doubt this is a scientifically done Statistic/there are lies, damned lies, and statistics> relevance very low/possibility of anyone in North America not having heard of Colbert, and known very well who he is, his opinons, the basis of his show, etc- especially amongst youth, is slim to none.

Read carefully: they did realize it was all jokes, they just didn't realize that Colbert is attacking "conservatives" rather than "liberals".

A similar thing happened in my country, when a comedy duo was making fun of far-right populists by starting a far-right populist party of their own (called the "anti party")
Problem was: millions of people actually agreed with what they jokingly said, and wanted to vote for them in the real elections.

No he doesn't, that's the point.

"Liberal" guests are usually made to look good while "Conservative" guests are usually made to look bad.
If you don't get that, you're probably a conservative.

We had the said "conservatives" on TWC too, no kidding....There was this member thinking Colbert was for real, and the rest of his posts where down the neocon line, so Im not surprised by this article.

The target demographic of the poll is hardly a reliable sounding board for the majority of conservatives. It seems a little too specific to create an accurate picture.

Oh, and Stephen Colbert is freaking hilarious, regardless of who he is making fun of.

Colbert must be a moderate, as he criticizes both liberals and conservatives.

Colbert's a comedian, who thinks comedians are serious when they're being comedic?
