    Default Cities/Castles

I want to know what do u usually have.
    My cities have crap units.
Usually stuff like seargents and spearmen.
They produce money but castles do too.

Castles are way better in my opinion.
They have 2x better units with their awesome stats.
Though they dont make a lot of money they still make some.
I dont think you can get gunpowder infantry units in castles though.

    What do u like?

P.S What are cities for besides Trade.

Cities are basically just for making money. I usually convert most of my castles into cities and leave one castle in every region (e.g. one in England, one or two in France) and use them to produce units with the money I make from cities. Plus cities can build merchants, diplomats, spies, and assassins.

Cities have noticeably better income. They can build alot better ships. Better tech. Have free upkeep for certain amount of militia units which can be valuable to have 20 combined units for free that you can ship to the front line. They can build better religious buildings. Some factions like Milan can actually produce their better units from cities.

Castles are easier to defend, better happiness so you can get away with leaving 2 or so units or even just a good general, and of course better troops.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but i think they have access to different guilds, so you might need some cities for those guilds if they could help you in any way.

Now that I've listed the differences for you and others that read this you can decide how you want to handle the castle city ratio. I usually have alot of cities with a few castles close to the front line(easier to defend and my best troops where i need them.) But sometimes if I have a nasty enemy I'll make my border with them pure castles, which helps noticeably.

    Hope this helps!

lol... Kimster2, did you really even played Medieval 2??
I mean, a city can earn easily earn 6000-8000, whereas a castle rarely passes 2000...

with a castle you can afford a lot less units then if it were a city.
Sure, city-troops are -troops but therefor you build 1 castle for every 4 towns...

Yes the units or not as good as in castles but you wouldn't be able to recruit good units if you only had castles. A casttle makes at top maybe 2000 florins and this is exceptional, usulay they don't get much higher earnings than 1600florins. A number of Units are free of upkeep and in castles they are not (In vanilla). Some Cities can make up to 10 000 florins per turn and they can trade Merchants (which you can't in castles) Merchants also brings you income.

Edit: I would like to add: that some units in cities like Italian Spear militia are quite good for early units and even in late period I always have some in my armies

You can't have gunpowder units from castles only cities

A good mix of them should be 5 cities for one castle and your castles needs to be well positioned

Cities are the most important thing, like I said above, they are your economic backbone, if you don't have cities and only Castle you won't stand a chance. I would even say that you will be sure to loose againts an oponent who as more cities. You need money to develop your castles toe be able to recruit good units, then you will need even more money to recruit them and upgrade their armour..... Also like said above cities can recruit Merchants (which you can't in castles) and I've seen Merchants make around 500 florins each per turn on normal resources and on some better like in timbuku and the new world I've seen Merchants make 2000 florins per turn

Depends on who you're playing as. For many factions it would be militarilly disastrous to rely on castle-trained forces - the Italians, of course, but also the Turks, Byzantium. Cities also give access to gunpowder troops, which castles do not (they only have artillery, for the most part.) Furthermore, the military arguement is a contradiction, in that you need wealth to support your military - and too many castles cripples your economy.

Like others have posted here, I usually have a castle near every front as the main producer, any more than that isn't really needed unless it is a large front (France going into Germany for example). Each castle acts as the main unit supplier for each region (producing 3 units per turn usually) has proved to be sufficient for me. It also depends on the faction, some factions have some pretty nice units produced from their cities. (Moors have those elite swordsmen, the name escapes me.. Milan has the Italian militia, etc).

Castles do not compare to cities economically at all.. cities will blow them away in almost every location after a slight amount of tech.

Cities also make spies, assassins, merchants, and better priest which Castles can't/don't (except a couple factions that can make spies).

One of my strongest empires started off with 32 cities and 2 castles. I tend to turn all castles to cities once I've conquered a region and I know that there will be no serious resurgence. This is the only way to afford the biggest armies.

There are also factions around that can recruit some of their top-tier units from cities only. And for most factions, cities are the only source for pike/halberd units. While they might not be the best unit you can get, they're certainly worth their money in the right situation.
And as far as I remember, castles are almost always growing very slow in comparison to cities so if you mainly rely on castles, you'll be behind on the tech level as well.

What if i cheat and get 200k + florins :]
Then castles are the best right?

If you start cheating, you don't have to ask about what type of settlement is best in the first place because they're no longer that important anyway (just get all the mercenaries you want).
But even if you start cheating yourself some money, cities still remain important in some cases as you can read in the posts above (gunpowder/top-tier/Italian units etc.)
That is unless you start cheating yourself some units, but that's really lame, isn't it?

I'd prefer alot of cities and only 1 or 2 castles depends on what location i am, i'd put the castle in a place where normaly the economy grows very slow and you don't get easy money in that area. But when you have alot of cities, you can use that economic boost to create troops in your castle, and in times of peace send those troops like Dismounted knights etc. to defend your cities, in that way you still have the good economy and almost every city you have is defended with units which you can only create in castles
Walls doesn't matter that much in the strategy map, only the battle map. (At least i think so)
