I'm looking for Fars so I can get some merchants in there. But I can't move my regiment into Moroccan territory, I guess because I don't have military access. So how do I find Fars? I'm Portugal.

Well, first of all, Fars isn't in Africa. Fars is a region in Persia.
Secondly, unless you have the idea Quest for the New World, you can't do anything but wait and hope it randomly becomes revealed to you.

I think he means Fez?

And I drank it strait down.
No it said the centre of trade is definitely Fars. It's like, I have a regiment led by a conquistador (I chose the New World time setting), and I'm trying to march them through Africa but the game won't let me.
But, it's in Persia though? Never mind then.
In the future, how can I just explore with a conquistador, on his own?
You can march a conquistadore freely through uncolonized land. Not through nations (unless you have military access)
Another question, how can I increase the chances of colonization? I'm trying to get a colony in Brazil but I just can't. Even though it's usually half/half, I've failed every single time in several campaigns now, all as Portugal. Does wholesale slaughter of natives help? I've done that a few times on a province, but the chances of success hardly go up. And I can't keep sending colonist after colonist because each one kills my treasury and it takes a year to rebound back.
Should I just stick to Africa, even though it's poor? Slaves aren't worth much right now.
well you have to look at what's effecting the chance to succeed. Just hold your mouse over the percentage and it'll tell you what...
such things as production efficiency and your monarch's administrative skill, and any national ideas you have. And, of course, native aggression.

I find that killing all the natives most of the time helps a lot. I don't know why it isn't working for you

Hmm brazil was easy as heck to colonize for me, even without any troops
Africa on the other hand...

Why would tax reduce the need for a bigger fleet?
Sorry I am still new to this too
I almost always killed the natives(in africa) and made my colonies asap.
well your tariff income is tied directly to how many large and small seafaring ships you have (ie not transport ships or galleys, and it works something like for each colony you need to have one of these seafaring ships to get 100%. otherwise, it's the number of seafaring ships divided by the number of colonies = your monthly tariff income. but that's only if you have fewer than what you need.), but only in IN.
Tariff income is derived from trade/production income from an overseas province.
Tax however is independent of this, but colonies generally have lower tax than your home provinces as they have much much smaller population 90% of the time unless you establish a CoT over there (which boosts population growth and tax income!). In fact, in one of my recent games as the byzantines, in founding a CoT at delta (aka new orleans), by the late game it's population equaled and even surpassed many of my home provinces.
Hence I feel it's always good to have a backup of sorts when it comes to income, especially given the importance of yearly income (which tax mostly contributes to) and it's relation to, well, not going broke.

Patched the game up to 1.3, and I have a nice handful of colonies in Brazil now. I'm surprised how quickly the other powers (France, England, Spain) took to America though. It's only been a few years.
You should buy expansions, they make the game much better.
Yeah colonizing on 1.3 happens ridiculously fast, kind of miss it in the expansions really.

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.
