    Default High attack/defense skill values?

I downloaded and installed the mod recently, and it's a great mod, obviously very high quality.

I was curious though, why are the attack and defense skill values so high compared to vanilla and most other mods?

It leads to some interesting situations, for instance when I charged a unit of elephants (large but unarmored) with heavy cavalry, the cavalry wiped the elephants out instantly losing only a dozen or so that died only after the elephants started running amok. I'm guessing this is because the charge bonus was around 40 for the cavalry, which kind of overpowers the elephants high HP and whatnot.

What kind of advantages does the high attack and all that have?

It balances the units and gives battles a more realistic feel, aswell as making the battles longer.

Plus, it gives your units the chance to test their abilities against opponents of equal capability to determine what situations your units are best suited for, but also, to find out where their weaknesses are.

And therefore there is more room for deploying tactics.

Ah yes, I can see it lengthening battles. The battle length is very good in my opinion, not too short, but also not too long.

I was curious though, what kind of effect does this have on the armour and shield effectiveness? I mean, when units have 40 defense skill, does it really matter whether their shield is 6 or 10, or whether their armor is 6 or 10, etc? Does it actually make a difference in melee combat?

Like Goldilocks used to say JUST PERFECT =)

I think having defenses and attacks at 50 instead of 10 is so that you can like do the formulas and stuff like bronze armor = X amount of X times X amount of X = defense rating

    I think.

nope. defence is still just the total of all the values. however, we simply use the larger numbers to generate longer battles. and yes, there is a difference between a unit with a shield rating of 6 and a unit with a shield rating of 10, actually.

Yeah, I know there is a difference, I mean that doesn't the high defense value kind of negate the difference?

I'm asking out of curiosity, I thought they were simply added up (ie, total defense in melee would be armor plus defense skill plus shield value), but I guess it must be more complicated.

Does a higher shield value protect against projectiles better and such?

total defence in melee against enemies attacking from the front or left (i.e. shielded side) = defence skill+armour+shield. defence against enemies attacking from the right side or rear = defence skill +armour (as far as i'm aware - though there may be extra penalties incurred when charged in the rear). Against missiles, defence skill counts for nothing, i'm assuming armour is used, but i think the shield value is doubled or somesuch.

I also find the elephants seem alittle underpowered so to speak, I think they should have more hitting power, they seem to easy to take out.

to be fair, they weren't exactly the best of ancient weapons... though i suppose that's more due to them being panicked - when they made contact, they did a fair bit o' damage.

Perhaps so, just expected them to give me more of a fight when I took on Epirus in southern Italy.

I fought with elephants once, and slaughtered them witm my peltasts. But the sitiuation look differrent, when YOU are in control of elephants. They are real killing machine.
