I've been looking for a strategy game that has a proper economic layer. Rome and Med2's economy system is quite thin. Does this game deliver on that front?

Yes.
That's all that needs to be said
Edit: I feel that I should add more info. YES! EU3's economic system blows every TW game out of the water, there is absolutely no competition to how indepth it is.
Apparently, the only thing more indepth that EU3's economic system, is Victoria's economic system (though I don't have to balls to try it out)

EU3's economy sytem is good but I've heard that Vics one is ten times better but is really complicated.
Victoria's is defintly much more detailed then EU3, but after playing it for a while its very easy, and much more fun then other games of this sort (EU, HoI, etc). While EU3 is good I would recommend Hearts of Iron 2. It is the easiest of the lot, and with the inclusion of focsued scenairos makes it the best of the lot.
no the economic model for EU3 is very poor i find the etw model is better.

The economic system is greatIt is pretty damn realistic as well...
I find ETW's trade route system is much better than EU3's use of COT's and merchants at least in regards to overseas trade (especially around the Indian sea). It still has its problems, but at its base level it does a better job of representing things.
Everything else though is far better in EU3.
Cool stuff. Thanks all.
Victoria has a proper economic system. EU's are always based on a board game stylish send merchant pieces to certain centers of trade to get income from the stuff traded by the provinces associate with it. It does not really make any sense other than being an exciting game concept.
Vicky is dealing with everything from the product demands of your population to the world markets. It's really nice how you may end up in colonial wars over raw ressources to keep your factories and economy expanding...
I however think that they could still improve on things.
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

Victoria is the best economic system in any paradox game, easily. Economics is a major focus of that game.

Victoria needed a tutorial , I remember having to start over a lot.
I don't think I am ever going back to ETW. I am so thankful I found this subforum![]()
I started playing and it's delightfully vast. Supply and demand, monopolies, trade centers, it's all very good.
Victoria has a nice soundtrack as well.
Victoria's system isn't perfect though, still doesn't make much sense with how you go managing a national stockpile of resources.
