Default America to Pakistan-‘Stop the Taliban now – or we will’

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle6168940.ece
AMERICA made clear last week that it would attack Taliban forces in their Swat valley stronghold unless the Pakistan government stopped the militants’ advance towards Islamabad.
A senior Pakistani official said the Obama administration intervened after Taliban forces expanded from Swat into the adjacent district of Buner, 60 miles from the capital.
The Pakistani Taliban’s inroads raised international concern, particularly in Washington, where officials feared that the nuclear-armed country, which is pivotal to the US war against the Taliban in Afghanistan and against Al-Qaeda, was rapidly succumbing to Islamist extremists.
“The implicit threat - if you don’t do it, we may have to - was always there,” said the Pakistani official. He said that under American pressure, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency told the Taliban to withdraw from Buner on Friday.
Hopefully Pakistan steps up it's efforts so the united States does not go into Pakistan as well.

Pakistan had better get its act together, we really don't need another front in the War on Terror...

I hope they do, imagine the uproar if Obama sent troops there.

It would technically be the same front just extended a little out to the east.

Right, but it's certain that we would have to fight Pakistani Nationalist movements in opposition to a US occupation, on top of fighting the Taliban in Pakistan, so it really would be opening up another can of worms.

    Take it easy,

*coughs* Not that secretly. There are movements in Pakistan that want the USA to fail. In case you didn't notice, the Taliban didn't took these two districts of Pakistan by brute force, they got them easily.

More proof the ISI control the Taliban. Notice how they told them to leave Buner and they did?

Indeed, it is a disturbing thing if the ISI controls the Taliban. If the ISI takes control of Pakistan who knows what the consequences could be?

The consequence is that India would increase its territory quite a bit.

The two countries should have never been partitioned in the first place. We don't know however if India even wants to take on the Economic and security responsibility for the region.

I would suspect if the Indians see the Taliban likely to get their hands on the nukes, by the end of that same day Pakistan will cease to exist, regardless of the cost to India. Their logic will be it is better to incur whatever expense is necessary to remain a viable state vs the alternative of the subcontinent becoming a layer of glass.

Have you ever been to India or Pakistan? Have you ever lived there? Have you lost anyone in the communal riots or during partition? Do you know how many pakistanis have died in trying to keep their nation alive and independent?

yep. thats a fact that many here in America do not want to accept. The ISI used the afghan war to milk the west for Billions of$, and now they will use this "pls support us or The Taleban will get the nukes" threat to milk the West for more $

some of that money and weapons would then in turn be given to the Taleban to further their war in Afghanistan

The government threatened the TSNM of Sufi Mohammad with a new operation on Swat and that's why they called back their men from Buner.

Perhaps there is an element in Pakistan that wants to see NATO fail in Afghanistan. I would understand why though. A preliminary study of Pak-American relations from 1947 onwards would reveal why.

Perhaps the Pakistani army should go into Afghanistan to stop the Taliban there because the US (along with some 10-15 NATO allies) has failed miserably to secure the country and it's been 8 years.

Why is this a shock? The ISI have been controlling the afghan radicals since the soviet invasion in the 1980's. Its a no brainer that the Taliban have strong ties to the ISI and are probably under their direct supervision.
