Default should I buy Vista or wait till Win7?

OK folks, here is my problem. I turned my PC to a local computer company for the full upgrade and they did a pretty good job. they did warn me, however, that I will most likely need to re-install Windows because I also have new motherboard.

obviously my old XP does not even start and it drives me completely crazy. looks like I have no other choice but to buy a new clean Windows and to install it on my computer... so, should I just run to the store and pick up a Windows Vista 64bit or should I wait till Windows7 comes out (as far as I understand, it will be May 5th?)...

    Throw away all your newspapers!
Most of you are Libertarians, you just havent figured it out yet.

Windows 7 is *NOT* coming out May 5th. That is just the public RC1

Since Windows 7 is highly based upon Windows Vista, if you become used to Vista you will find it easier to transition into Windows 7.

Windows 7 will be somewhat of a minor OS upgrade as OS upgrades go.

There is nothing wrong that you become acquainted with Windows Vista. Windows Vista is not going to disappear quietly into the night. It will form the heart of Windows 7. There will be some further improvements and changes along the way, but ultimately it will be a far more jarring leap for those using XP to go to Windows 7 than it will be for those using Vista.

I have vista and do not recommend it...
    For what reasons?

and if you must get vista do not get the 64 bit...
A lot of people have genuinely experienced no issues with 64-bit at all. The problem faced is that not all applications and drivers support 64-bit architecture. However more and more device drivers are being written for 64-bit, and so far only a small minority of 32-bit applications fail to run on 64-bit architecture.

So, yes, since you are going to buy an OS anyways, you may as well buy Vista, the newer and better OS. Windows 7 is not coming out till later this year, and possibly not until 2010 if certain events happen.

If there was an actual FUD factory, Vista would be on it's logo.

Since the TC is going to buy an operating system anyways, it may as well be Vista over Windows XP. Windows 7 is not going to come out till later this year and possibly 2010. Since there are many familiar things in Windows 7 from Windows Vista, getting acquainted with Vista will help you transition to Windows 7 easier.

I have used Windows 7. When the RC1 comes out May 5th I shall dual-boot it, as I have done with Windows 7 Beta.

I would genuinely be interested in the key points of why you think 7 "destroys" Vista. I doubt people would like it if I said Vista "destroys" XP.

    Vista Pre-SP1 ?
Vista PRE-SP1 was actually in better shape than XP PRE-SP1. NVIDIA actually released pretty bad drivers for Vista originally, and caused 30% of errors.

That doesn't just happen you know.... there had to be a specific cause or everyone would be having those problems.

The issue is that those are general hardware errors, and/or a very crufty software configuration with viruses, generally an "un-optimized" system. A truly stable system will never experience severe errors like random reboots, program crashes and desktop freezes. Random restarts especially sounds like severe hardware fault.

What did you have installed on Vista? How old was the install? Was there any real maintenance done? Even after only a couple of months of improper software maintenance, errors like that can occur that are in no real way related to the OS.

I run Windows Vista without any stability problems . The only recent problems I have had are ones that I know what I have done to cause them and hence I fix them by undoing my mistake. (Caffeine makes you get.....experimental.) Even then they are not exactly fatal or stop me from doing anything.

Did you have the latest sound, video, network and chipset drivers? At that did you have the latest Windows Updates?

Those errors just should not occur and if they do I can challenge that they are just not related explicitly to Vista. Me, and a majority of Vista users can all agree.

For example people call Fallout 3 an "un-optimized" and an "un-stable" game. Yet I experience no crashes at all with Fallout 3 and it runs generally well even on my aging system. I maintain my hardware and software at the highest levels possible and those are the results. Hence the blame can be put on their systems and not explicitly Fallout 3.

It's hard when you receive thousands of error reports, since you have to root out which ones are system errors, user errors or the actual fault of your software.

Do you NEED to buy either? Thats the question. You can obtain a version of XP fairly easily today, and getting a beta version of Windows 7 is simple and legal.

I've had ridiculous problems the past 3 weeks with Vista and FINALLY ironed them out. Most frustrating OS i have ever used, and i've used Gentoo at one time. I wouldn't suggest it unless you are a computer expert.

obviously my old XP does not even start and it drives me completely crazy.
You have the Cd still don't you? Use that.

There is no reason to upgrade to vista. Even if you have a computer build by Dell with vista included you still will run into issues, especially with drivers. If you have an nvidia graphics card the drivers for vista are terrible. I had to try several different versions of the nvidia driver until i found one that didn't crash. Can't deny facts.

If you have a nvidia card look up vista on the nvidia forums and be prepared for the 1000s of posts of issues. No exaggeration. Or simply use google and see that every topic is something with someone complaining on how bad it is.
