    Default Recent non-English language films

I wanted to start a thread for people to discuss and recommend films in other languages than English that have come out in the last few (5 or 6) years. After all, Hollywood formulae get boring after a while. I feel like I'm missing out by not having access to so many great films, and wanted help finding more.

I just watched Paradise Now, an amazing film about two would be suicide bombers from Palestine which gives a very compelling and tragic account of the moral turmoil of young men who get involved in this form of violence.

It seems most of the best films I have watched recently have been non-English language. Other recent favourites have been Let The Right One In (which seems to have suddenly got very popular) and 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

So let's exchange information about really exceptional non-English language films so we can all widen our cinematic horizons a little.

Why only the last 5-6 years? You'Re missing out on some GOOD films with that restriction.

hmm...my old spanish teacher used to bang on about Volver which was a Spanish Language film. One I really enjoyed was The Motorcycle Diaries, which is again in spanish.

Does Trainspotting count? I hear they had to subtitle it for the americans

Also I really want to see Waltz With Bashir, an animated Israeli film about the war with Lebanon.

I needed subtitling for conversations over MSN with people from Yorkshire and Dublin. No one has a clue wtf they were saying.

Quite recent but El laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) is an amazing Spanish film.

The Dardenne brothers' movies are a good example of Franco-Belgian cinema, very sober and pessimistic.

The Germans have been making quite a few really good movies the last few years: Lola Rennt, Das Leben der Anderen and some others I can't remember the name anymore

'Låt den rätte komma in' is a really good recent Swedish film.

And though older, I really recommend 'C'est arrivé prez de chez vous'. Very absurd black comedy.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
