    Default New monitor

Will I notice much of a difference between that and my current 17 inch monitor? It seems like 11 inches wouldn't be that significant.

Hell yea; i went from a 24 to a 13" to a 22", personally id recommend a 24" Dell IPS type panel, my 22 can literally be seen on a plane with sharp colour repro , 27" is massive youd like it.

I would go for a more expensive panel like S-PVA but they are way out of my price range.

It can be found if you know where to look: This is the one I have and I love it.

That is because it uses a TN panel, which by todays standards is crap, but that is what I use now and I am very satisfied with it.

    TN - Twisted Nematic
    - cheap, excellent response times, good for gaming
    - color reproduction, contrast are bad (though still viewable, not as vibrant as others)

Most people go with TN because its cheap but other will go with IPS or VA for graphics work or a better monitor in general.

There are three basic types of LCD monitors TN, S-PVA and IPS.

TN (twisted nematic) is the most common technology found in today's LCD monitor screens, it's two biggest advantages are it's fast response times and there cheaper to produce and sell then the other two. TN monitors have a response time of around 2 to 3ms. The draw back of TN is colour reproduction which is very poor, these monitors are not suitable if your into semi pro design and are ok for films and games.

S-PVA (super patterned vertical alignment) is a lot more expensive then TN, for example you buy a 24" LCD tn for around about £180, a 24" S-PVA is going to cost upwards of around £350 to £400 so if your not sure what technology a screen uses just look at the price tag as a guide (but always double check with the manufacturers site). S-PVA is less expensive then IPS but responses times are greater then TN displays, typically around 5 to 6ms but there colour reproduction is excellent and their a good compromise between TN and the super expensive IPS. From experience my Dell 2407WFP smashes cheap TN displays to dust, text is clear, crisp and sharp, colours are vibrant and crisp (sorry to keep using that word) and it plays games with no ghosting. films however don't come across as good on my screen although that could be me and the way I have it setup, input lag is noticeable at times but I'm not complaining.

IPS (In Plane Switching) generally these are considered to be the Rolls Royce of LCD screens and as such they have a price tag to match. Unless your a professional designer with cash on the hip stick to IPS or TN, unless you find yourself a bargain.

Hi SPQR, our studio at work uses that HansG monitor, they needed a big screen to work on audio files it really does help being able to stretch out file across that much screen real estate, it also comes with HDMI if you have a video card that can support it. It's max resolution is 1920x1200 which is the same 24" but on that 28" it's stretched out more but to be honest when I've used it it's not that big a deal where DPI is concerned. Reviewers have slated it for it's poor colours and contrast and I've never used it for films of game but I would imagine they would look pretty impressive on it.

If I were you I would look at some of the cheaper 24" screens from Dell, NEC and Samsung, these companies consistanly produce the best quality screens.

I went from a 22" to a 25.5" screen and there is indeed a massive difference. I highly do not recommend that large of a screen unless you are able to position it far enough from you. Looking back I wish I would have went with a 24" screen.

How far back should I be?

    @Hyabusa

TN panels have been around for alot longer and only display at 6-bit while IPS and PVA are 8-bit which have more vivid colors.

So how far back should I be? Because of the way my desk is designed, I am 18 inches from the screen. I want to get my moneys worth for whatever I buy.

Are there any good 24 inchers you can think of that dont have a history of coming with dead pixels. Neweggs policy on dead pixels is crap.

I'm 24" from my 26" screen (too big at too close strains the eyes quite a bit)

If I were you I'd go with a 22" screen at 18" distance from.

Samsung or Dell have good customer service if you get bad pixels and go through the actual company, otherwise since you live in the Northern US you can buy from NCIX which offers a 0 dead pixel guarentee. (NCIX is out of Canada but they ship to the US as well)

Are they good priced? Do I need to buy them from the factory or would Newegg work?

Newegg would prolly be just fine, very few monitors actually have bad pixels unless the shipper abuses the package too much. Samsung is cheaper than Dell and they offer pretty good prices for the 22/24 models.

You could buy from Amazon instead, I had a bad monitor with 2 dead pixels and they replaced it immediately. Also, yeah I've heard Newegg's policy is not that great.
