Who do you guys believe is the TOP WORLD POWER of today? I obviously believe America is. And I could argue that via many points. But obviously I have a bias. So what do you think???

The USA has the most economic influence and best military, and could be considered the "top power", but its not like you can make a list of the ten most powerful nations.

One nation alone is nothing. The US economy relies heavily on other countries like China, India, Canada, Germany, Saudi Arabia... and its military is easily overstretched without foreign support, as any other country's would be.

The world is very complex, in that every country's power is dependent on others, and everything they do outside their own borders must be supported by certain allies and not be too offending to other significant parties.

For example, the US wants to invade Afghanistan. Without the cooperation of Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, it would be a complete disaster, with arms and militants flowing freely over the borders, creating a situation that even the US military in all its power could never fully defeat. A big part of its initial success was Iranian cooperation, the northern countries allowing use of their land as military bases and staging areas for the allies, etc. A big part of its trouble and why the east provinces are still overrun by Taliban every spring is the lack of support from Pakistan.

Being the top power does not mean much unless you have other powers to support you and you maintain good relations with the nations your economy depends on.

So while its fine to make the claim of being a major world power, you must always remember that unless the guys behind you have your back, you're going to fall, because while you are strong, you aren't strong enough to handle everything you get into.

Wisely spoken ! I was wondering when somone would say something like that. I agree with you all the way. The sad thing is, you got alot of Dum Americans yet who don't realize that. America relies heavily on allies in many areas... But at the same time there's alot of Suck-Up nations that would do anything just to get American money. Even IF they don't like us...

I agree in that nature, we have definately spread ourselves thin, AND our governmet is SHRINKING our millitary spending (While rising that of everything else)! At this moment we our in the lead, but we need to gain control of where we are at...
