Default Which Generation is Going to Save the World?

I'm not much of an Oprah fan, but my mom worships her, and so she called me to tell me about recycling (of all things) and to turn on the tube. Well I managed to find the piece again on a site.

It's about a floating island of trash twice the size of Texas... some places 90 feet deep, that stretches from California to Japan.

So anyway this got me thinking. With all the things we are doing to our planet, which generation will it be that will actually have to foot the bill?

It seems to me the one that gets ed the most. That seems to be a recurring pattern.

You can watch that series at the bottom here.
    But mark me well; Religion is my name;

Too often talked of, but too little known.

The bill we foot will be nothing compared to those of our children, and especially grandchildren (if there is anything left to bill). Friedman's Hot, Flat, and Crowded is especially vocal on this point.

Hmm, I never heard of it. I'll look it soon.

And watching the movie about plastic and the floating garbage island.... is unnerving. They're a small boat and yet the amount of garbage they pick up at the surface, especially the plastic, it's mind boggling.

The generation that could have saved the world has come and gone. Their sacrifices came to naught.

Over and over it seems to be that way yes.

We should have some kind of Committee to name names of those responsible for polluting like this... and then kill 'em. The Chinese executed the people in charge of their tainted milk scandal a while back, why not do so with other just as damaging scandals?

Because some of the perpetrators are high profile individuals.

Only recently I heard one individual suggest that polluting the Earth's upper atmosphere is good for the planet.

You want to know who polluted this way?

Western society. So unless you're planning to execute 99% of the American population, your draconian, fascist, joke theory here wouldn't work.

It's hilarious how so many people always want a scapegoat, even if they were the ones at fault themselves. They just want to pin the blame on somebody ELSE, because of course it wasn't ME who ever did anything wrong!

Just like with the economic collapse, it's all about the BIG EVIL BANKS, they killed the economy!

Nicely ignoring the fact that idiotic Americans buying things they couldn't afford for decades was just as much to blame.

It's a misleading way to put it, but it means there's enough trash to cover two Texas', circling the Gyre in the middle of the Pacific.

I wanted to find some pictures and in so doing found this article which seems pretty lucid on the subject.

    http://hd2o.tv/flog/2009/the-great-p...garbage-patch/

Translation, its real but the threat is being over stated.

    Interesting quote from there.

No one thinks any possible benefits of plastic outweigh risks, however Prof. Karl did find some positive aspects of the patch — a high concentration of microorganisms clinging to the debris. “The microorganisms are good for the ocean, because it turns out they’re making oxygen,” Prof. Karl says. “If plastics were otherwise neutral to the environment, then they’d be helping by harvesting more solar energy.” Dr. Bamford says it is possible that a cleanup, even if it were feasible, would do more harm than good, by removing these organisms.

"Generation X", who are just coming to power as the "Baby Boom" generation (finally) retires seems a lot more responsible to me.
I have good hopes for them.

And that's ironic, because the spoiled "Baby Boom" brats have always considered "Gen X" a "lost generation".

I would say not any generation in particle "will save the world". Whatever that mission contains.. From what I can see, the developed world becomes "more clean" every year. The population growth in most developed nations is pretty dull too.

To be perfectly honest, human nature will result in our end. Or at least, the end of modern Civilization. Let's face it, no matter how much "eco friendly" crap we begin to use, six billion people is way, way too much for the Earth to hold. That is why I do not concern myself about the environment. I know that war, collapsing economy, starvation, and disease shall cull the human herd. I do not have to worry about how the Earth will look in a century or two, because all signs point to, inevitably, it being rather hellish. I will be dead by then. The Earth will go on without my actions, and without me. The human species will likely struggle on for a long time as well, but as I've said, we are ultimately self destructive.

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
    And eternity in an hour.

have no fear, after I get elected as a local senator, then congressional senator in the next 10 to 15 years, the following five will lead up to my presidency and thus the savior of the modern world. I have it all planned out. I will save the world.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.
