Default One in Three Children Fear Earth Apocalypse

No Kidding, One in Three Children Fear Earth Apocalypse

There's a new bogeyman lurking in the closet, and this one isn't imaginary. Us. One out of three children aged 6 to 11 fears that Ma Earth won't exist when they grow up, while more than half—56 percent—worry that the planet will be a blasted heath (or at least a very unpleasant place to live), according to a new survey.
Commissioned by Habitat Heroes and conducted by Opinion Research, the telephone survey polled a national sample of 500 American preteens—250 males and 250 females.
On a sliding scale of anxieties, minority kids have it worst; 75 percent of black children and 65 percent of Hispanic children believe that the planet will be irrevocably damaged by the time they reach adulthood.
Interestingly enough, kids vex over the state of the planet, especially when it came to safe and clean air and water, regardless of any pro-environmental measures on the part of their parents. A staggering 95 percent of the children surveyed said their parents pitched in by recycling, using rechargeable batteries, and conserving water and electricity.
"We commissioned the survey as a result of my own childrens' experiences with the recent fires in Australia as they expressed much concern for both their safety and the planet’s,” said Sharon Lowe, founder of Habitat Heroes, in a press release. “While it is upsetting to hear how many children in the United States have expressed similar concerns, I am more committed than ever to help educate children around the globe in a way that is not scary to them.”

They're probably right. The world can't support the people it already has at a reasonable standard of living, which is why the majority of the human race live in poverty, and the only way is up. With the population increasing ever further out of control and demanding more and more that the resources of the planet can't even begin to maintain, the environmental impact will be catastrophic.

These kids are probably wrong about the time-frame. They're exaggerating to worry about disaster before they even reach adulthood, but they can expect the world to be a significantly grimmer place at least within their own lifetime.

You can't really call it brain washing. Most religions have an end-times prediction. Even Scientology.

The world will have many more Millerites and great disappointments.

Agree with Cluny. The world only has enough natural resources to support about 7-8 billion people at once and even now people in some parts of the world are struggling to fill even their most basic needs. Most of the fear these kids are seeing come from all this 2012 nonsense and how much hype and press it gets. But their future is grim, resources are already starting to dwindle in some areas and once it begins to dwindle for the big boys there is going to have to be some "cleaning" done to keep their countries from turning into a Zimbabwee. In my opinion we will be seeing World War III sometime before 2050 and it will be caused by large nations seeking survival from starvation unless something major happens between now and then.

It's the same thing as when I was growing up, except then we worried about the end of days coming from a mushroom cloud.

See there is a little difference though this time. The Cold War was nothing more the a staring contest on a global scale to see who would blink first. Most rational people during the Cold War really never expected Armageddon to come for the simple reason that neither Nation had a whole lot to gain from Armageddon, though I could understand the fear the children had during the era due to the insane amount of propaganda spit on from both ends.

This time around it's a fact that it's going to happen unless we have some MAJOR advances on agriculture and are able to get our desalinization plants running much more efficient. Once the citizens of the US, Russia, China, Japan, and the EU start looking like the citizens of Somalia or the Congo because a loaf of bread costs $80 and a bottle of water costs $50. The thing is with the way Earths current population is growing, it's setup that we will see the blossoming on this situation within most of our lifetimes.

I can verify that Armageddon most certainly did seem real during the Cuban Missile crisis.

btw, the doomsday prophesies relating to overpopulation are the same exact ones I've been hearing since the mid-70s.

This is a big conclusion to draw from the 500 kids they talked to on the phone.
If the soul is impartial in receiving information, it devotes to that information the share of critical investigation the information deserves, and its truth or untruth thus becomes clear. However, if the soul is infected with partisanship for a particulat opinion or sect, it accepts without a moment’s hesitation the information that is agreeable to it.—Ibn Khaldun.

Why would people fear the end of the world anyway?

It would be wonderful if the day comes, because after that day you'd not need to worry about anything else!

1 in 3 children have 30% chances of surviving the apocalypse

From a brighter angle: if only 1/3 of those are the ones that expressed fear about it earlier, they may have taken action earlier on based on their fears, so their survival rate is at a decent 60% so that gives us a decent survival rate as a species

Do not fear the inevitable future but look to the present..have as much fun as you can while you're still living and breathing.
