Techno is alright for background noise.

This poster has probably never heard a techno song in his life.

    Rob Dougan-Clubbed to death

Most definitely falls under the genre breakbeat. Breakbeat often uses strings and similar classical melodies.

There is a ton of crappy hardcore, but theres some good stuff too, in particular the stuff that gets mixed with dnb or the stuff on industrial strength records.

Nice finds. I was really into the early hardcore stuff done on tracker programs. I got a lot of it from BBS's or from swapping floppy disks with friends. It was all non-label stuff, but it was quite good. I still have it on my old computer and am now tempted to fire it up and transfer it over. I'm not too sure if anything even supports .mod and .st3 music files any more though.

EDIT: It's not hardcore, but this was one of my favorite songs of tracker music. It was origionally part of a 1993 demo by Future Crew. It's played here in the Scream Tracker program.

There's techno and there's techno like in any other genre.

Clubbed to death is my song but it is not really techno. Otherwise there's good techno and there's really bad one, just like there's good music and pop...
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

VLC my friend. Almost 100% sure it plays .mod. I bet it plays .st3 as well. Damn thing runs anything and everything.

Hmm...well it might not. I don't know. It doesn't convert correctly for mpeg-2 with .mod extensions...worth a try regardless I guess.

Theres a trance thread on the same page.

That rob dougan song is chill and has some brief somewhat ambientey sections but isn't ambient at all itself. Ambient usually doesn't have a beat, (but the one below does have a very minor one). It's usually about how much it changes and flows and stuff, rather then just relying on one melody and being 4 to the floor and dancey (i.e. it's nothing like that at all).

    Ambient

    dub/downbeat

    downbeat

Well as I said, some ambient has a little bit of one, but for the most part no, although theres certainly plenty of kinds of music that are influenced by ambient that have a strong beat.

While we have techno, ambient and trance in one thread. You can't go past the genre classic trance, which originally started by adding ambient to techno(or theres some stuff that is sortof more influenced by acid house, depends on which artists your refering to). As you can see quite clearly in this track:
